Injectors what goes wrong?
I have a 03 and just replaced 2 injectors. Im sure the others arent to far away from dieing. I was just wondering if anyone knows what exactly goes wrong with these things??? When I took mine out thay looked fine from a visual point of view. Cant figure out how thay exactly work. Is it mostly the nozzles that go or what
I would have takin mine apart but I would have lost my core fund. I know alot of the problem is that thay are leeking but what part or parts are exactly leeking.

Shortly after the CRs were around a shop foreman friend at Cummins told me they are VERY intolerant of water, even worse than the 2nd gen 24Vs. Pressure mods are hard on them too. A 2 micron final filter is a VERY good thing to have. Craig
I saw that AFE makes a drop in 3 micron filter, I'm thinking about getting one for my next change. It costs a bit more, about $28, but doesn't mod anything so it shouldn't alert the warranty ***** if the truck goes in for service.
I am also interested in the new AFE filter. Although, I read somewhere on one of these boards (DTR or TDR) that a 3 micron filter negates the water separation abilities of the canister. No explanation why, just the statement. Any thoughts on this?
I figured that H2o Wouldnt be a good thing. I keep hearing about everyones injectors going out so there has to be something to this besides H2o and not having a 2 micron filter. I was talking to a local guy who had a 06 and under 60 thousand miles and lost 3 injectors. If these injectors require a 2 micron filter why wouldnt dodge put one in? this would save them alot on warranty. I think bosch just designed a pice of crab injector!!!! and probably never tested it under real world conditions. I say everyone who has had there injectors go get together and storm down bosch headquaters and beat some sense into the engineers!!!!!!!!!
I'd venture a guess that many here would blame the ULSD fuel as the biggest cause of failure. I'm relatively new to diesels, but many threads have suggested that the lower lubricating characteristics of the new fuel shortens the life of the injectors. I saw something about the rail pressure on the CR trucks being higher than the older engines, maybe the additional pressure puts mors strain on the system.
Here is a laymans write up on how the system works.

Then we will storm the doors of everyone who is behind this ulsd crap!!!! And take out some tree huggers to. I love my diesel truck! And i love the smell of diesel in the morning!!!! Im calm now who said that? But anyhow i was just wondering if there was a certain part in the injector that is mostly faling? I know there is alot of parts to the injector. Just trying to narrow down the problem.
Do a Search on Don M. He owns F1 Diesel that does the Flux injectors for the common rails. He posted one time what normally goes wrong with them. From what I remember it was bad seats and some cracked bodies from running too much pressure with aftermarket boxes. CR injectors are also very finiky about torqueing the tip down on the injector. Too tight or too loose and they will leak.
