Injector no start

I was wondering, will one bad injector cause the engine not to start?

The diagnostics they ran on it showed a weak #2 injector. We're pretty sure it's a fuel problem of some sort. The truck will start when pulled or sometimes when the foot pedal is pumped. We've stopped the return lines to make sure it wasn't a return problem.

The grid heater works fine and it has new batteries.

With 700,000 miles on it I know it's time for an injector change anyway, but was wondering if this could cause the no start issue?

Thanks,

Ken

Wow 700,000 miles. I got less than 70,000 out of my injectors. When you say you stopped the return lines does that mean you plugged rail relief valve also? that could give a no start.

We stopped the overflow line from the injector pump and then the return from the fuel filter. Not sure if the high pressure rail relief would run right back to the injector pump (through the fuel filter housing) or not by doing this.

One other question I had is how much of a job is it to replace injectors? The manual says a specialty tool is needed to pull the feed line from the injector, is this correct or can a guy pull these somehow without it?

Yea 700,000 is alot for the injectors, but we were shooting for 1,000,000 darn it.

Thanks,

Ken

Does it not start only when the engine is cold? If so, and it acts like my truck, leaving the block heater plugged in will allow it to build enough pressure to make it start.

Try capping that injector off, if a common rail diesel has excessive leakage at injector it will cause a no start condition.

Ok thanks very much. We will try both and see what happens.

Miller Special Tool, 9011,
block the high pressure fuel line at the rail, one injector at a time. Is a single injector the cause of the white smoke and/or miss?

Yes we think it's only one injector but I'm sure the rest need replacing/reconditioning. The miss isn't really that noticeable but it's definetly there, we checked it against my 03 and could tell the difference in engine vibration and exhaust noise. It doesn't blow white smoke.

Did Dodge use the same injectors for all the 04's? Ours is an early 04 not a 04.5. Was just wondering if the same injectors could used in both or did they change them. After 700,000 miles I'm not sure they could/should be rebuilt.

Thanks for all the info!! I do appreciate it.

I believe the 03 and early 04 are the same motor, I could be wrong though. Don't know about 04 injectors to 04.5's.
I just rolled 100,000 on my 04.5 and I bought it in mid 05 w/ 7,200 miles on it, you must do alot of highway running....I'm impressed though. Is this the first real issue you've had with the 04?

Yes that's been the only real problem aside from a few parts that just plain wore out (water pump, generator, tranny @ 290,000, and tires of course). It's my brother's truck and it's been pulling campers since he bought it new. He's definetly used but never abused the truck and that has paid off for sure.

Thanks,

Ken
