Have had the truck in the shop @ 26k, 31k and now 36k for the "Injector knock" that I first started hearing @ 26k and has never gotten any better, or worse since. They don't hear it and say all is well ........... OK, I am going with that and just turn the radio up more now.

This has been going on for just over 10k miles now. I have used all kinds of diesel treatment and nothing has made a noticable difference.

My question is: I know I am not imagining this noise and know it is there and know it was not there for the first 26k miles. Does anyone have any thoughts on this eventually doing any engine damage or self destruction many miles down the road ?

 

I have had this fantom knock also. The dealership cleaned my injectors, and finally replaced one of them. They contributed it to bad fuel (from western Canada). I was out east.

The problem is most dealer ships figure knocking is normal for a diesel so they will disreguard it. Do this. Put the e brake on, foot on the brake, put the truck in gear and accelerate the engine untill you hear the abnormal knock. (make sure that you are pointed in a sfe direction when doing this in case the brakes let go).

If the knock shows up and is more pronounced due to the lack of road noise go to the dealership and have them do a cylinder kill test doing the same procedures as above. What they will do is kill each cylinder individually untill the knock goes away, then hopefully they can dignose from their.

Failing all that be carefull running the engine with a bad injector. Make sure that you have a copy of the work order from the dealership saying that they found no fault. That way you are covered if the engine fills with fuel and or other bad fault happens.

I have been going through this myself for the past year and a bit. Slowly making head way on the matter myself.

OK, so if an injector does crap out in say another 10k miles, which would make about 46k on my truck and fills the engine with diesel, what damage is going to be done to the engine and is there any early warning signs to know that this is happening before it is too late?

And if this does happen, what is the dealer or DC going to do about it since the 36k mile warranty is up?

 

Mine truck is going in Friday for this same issue, hopfully I don't get a beat around the bush answer about whats going on.

 

In all rights the inector should not leak that much to fill your crank case (it does happen but rare). You might check your oil level more often and smell to verify if diesel is in it. If the oil level seems high and you smell diesel in it then you have a problem. That is when i would send away an oil sample to verify the amount of diesel in the oil.

The diesel should evaporate when you drive if you have a small amount in it and i would not worry.


The warrenty for the engine should be up to 170,000km. With no deductible at all.

Check your oil level and smell it for a strong odour of diesel.

Really if the dealership says it isnt leaking and your still with in your engine warrenty and the engine blows, you get a new one.

Just a thought here. Do you hear this noise from inside the cabin or also outside? (I could hear mine inside but not outside) I ask because mine started making a different noise after 11,000 miles or so and just couldn't put my finger on it. Come to find out, it was the insulation that is behind the motor up on the firewall that goes down past the tranny. That had dropped down about 1/2" or 1" or so. I finally had to use Liquid Nail crap to glue that back onto the body. Since then, I hear no noise anymore from inside the cabin.

So, not saying it isn't your injectors but boy, when it fell, I heard the back of my motor something fierce from the injectors firing. Now nice and quiet again.

So, just a thought.

This being my first diesel, I'm not sure if I would even recognize this knock even if I heard it. To me it just sounds like a diesel.

I think that is what most say when they bring their trucks into them.

 

Try adding some Stanadyne+Marvel Mystery Oil to the fuel. For what it's worth, I've used additives since buying the truck but last week I was tired, PO'd and in a hurry and didn't add anything when I filled up. The truck sounded like a jackhammer on the loose in the engine. A couple of days later, I dumped in some Stanadyne and some MMO and it quieted down shortly thereafter.

I've come to the conclusion that ALL diesel fuel is crappy.

 

No, but I'd consider it if they'll double my current salary.

I typically put a bottle of Diesel Kleen in my tank about every 4-5 tanks. I'm not really sure that it actually helps anything, but I like to think that it helps keep my injectors nice and clean. Is Stanadyne better than Diesel Kleen? If so, where can you get it at?

Stanadyne and the Marvel mystery oil is about the only thing I have not tried this far. What is your mixture ratio you are using?

Sorry to be so long in replying, rico 334. I've not been logging much internet time lately.

In case you haven't already tried the Stanadyne/MMO, I just use the recommended amount on the label of each product--eyeballing more than measuring. Hope that helps.
