Important Tranny Question....
I just bought (well, dc replaced my lemon but I had to pay difference) a new 07 Mega 4x4. The truck has a 48RE in it.
My question is: Is the 48RE trannys as bad as I read? I will only be pulling a travel trailer (7K#) once or twice a year and every now and then, me and buddies ride atv's, so Ill be pulling about 4 of them on a 16 footer. Other than that, we take family vacations every year and love to drive. Thats going to be a majority of the miles on my truck (regular non-loaded driving).
Do you guys think Ill be fine???

Sure it will. It all depends how you maintian it and of course how much abuse you put it through. The key to make any tranny last is keeping the fluid cool and clean. If the motor remains stock or you do just mild upgrades to it; you keep the tranny on the cool side while towing and you change the filter and fluid regularly; it'll last for a long time.............
It's not that it's a POS, it just can't handle high amounts of HP and TQ.

Keep things in perspective. The very FEW that whine about the 48re in no way represent the majority. Don't let the few posters who have had a problem establish the reputation for the 48re.
I tow a 7200# Sunnybrook TT about 4K miles per year and have had NO trouble with my tranny.
My CTD is completely stock and I maintain a rigorous maintenance schedule. While some have had problems (and I emphathize with their pain) most folks will tell you that the 48re is a solid tranny.

Very good post! I agree completely.
I am currently running my Smarty on level 9 and have towed some very heavy loads as well. My trans is doing great and is not giving me any indication of a problem in almost 70K. I also change out the trans fluid and filter about every 20k.
Dodge recomend 30K fluid & filter changes on the 48RE. NOT FLUSHES, just fluid & filter. My 04.5 had 70K with no hickups on the tranny, pulling a 32' fiver about 11K loaded. I changed every 30K as recomended. My 07 only has 3K so can't tell you yet on it but think that the newer tow/haul settings are much better than the 04 was. Drive it and enjoy it. Get a temp gague for ti if you are really concerned so that you can monitor it.

It's true, the 48RE is a piece of junk that may fall apart at any given time. Little known fact: it's actually made of thin glass and balsa wood. Some have been known to disintegrate when exposed to water, some stop working if they hear you talk bad about them.
The Allison, on the other hand, is not only an heirloom transmission (be sure to include it in your will because it will outlive you and your children's children), but it has been known to restore hair loss, cure terminal illness, and give some people magical powers. I personally know at least one guy who developed the ability to fly just by owning one.
All kidding aside, the 48RE is a fine transmission. The only down side of it is that it suffers from some negative association with the 47RE.
