Ran my 03 for 28 hrs one winter day/night to keep the trailer charged and warm when the generator quit at -24*. It idled up and down as it needed with no input from me. No ill effects and no significant smoke after.

I wouldn't do it normally but wouldn't hesitate to do again if needed.

On my truck u turn the cruise on and press accel until desired rpm

i've let mine idle 8 hours or more with no high idle feature and no problems have a buddy who idles more then i do and has no problems and his truck has over 200k on it 04 model

Once you have the option turned on, either by the dealer or by a smarty, you need a wire that goes into the ecm and connects to a ground (for manual transmission only). There should be a post on here if you search. The dealer if they even know about the option will try to sell you a "clutch switch kit" for $300, Cummins will sell you the exact same kit for $100. The only item from the kit needed is the ECM wire which is about $12 from Cummins. I found this out after I bought the kit from them. Any way it is a great feature and I use it in the summer to keep the cab cool, and in the winter to keep the engine happy and warm.
