I believe my truck was about to throw a piston rod
Well this Sunday going up to Madison Wisconsin for a relaxing day of boating (normally a 1hr drive on 90). Got almost there when I first heard a tap..tap..tap
. Stopped by the side and checked oil & transmission (boy is that a safe place to be on a Sunday). Figured the next exit 2-3 miles. By the time I got to the exit ..knock...knock..knock....knock
.(not good, hurts you bones to hear it). Well got a tow and it was a pretty sight. Truck on the flatbed and the boat behind that. I took it to Janesville Wisconsin "Frank Boucher Dodge".I do not know what is going to happen. I do not think I'll be boating this weekend
. I build heat treat furnaces and know "ka ka" happens, just hope it is not too painfull. I will let you know what happens.

Knock was at idle. The engine @ ide had a very slight roughness. When driving did not notice any roughness. Every once on a while the knock would skip a couple of beats. Then come back with a vengence (sp). The noise was progressive the more it was running the worst it gets. NUTS.
I think it was close to major breakdown even the wife noticed the noise berore it became a knock. At first I thought the ticking was from my son's GameBoy. The oils were fine and nothing around the engine looked bad. All gauges were same as usual before during or after. Of coarse the wife took pictures with everything hooked up
. I was too busy helping the driver to take much. Took two after the guy arrived and I disconnected the boat from the truck. I will post them tomorrow. The dealer will let me know today what is going to happen now. The truck is all stock except for the gauges, nerf bars & bed cover.

The dealer just called. They are shocked something like this happened with the Cummins. They are going to start taking the heads off to see if it is something with the heads. If nothing they will take it apart till they find the root cause

I bet they are looking for a performance chip or something like that (since I got gauges). Well good luck...had it since 18 miles, never had it don't want it. But they are arranging a vehicle for me and I will get it when I pick up my boat. I sure hope it is nothing bad or takes a long time to get back to boating.

I hate to tell you this....The computer estimates oil pressure based on RPM. If the motors got over 7 psi (i think) the gauge will read ~40.
On my aftermarket gauge, HOT oil at idle reads 18-20psi vs. dash gauge of ~40psi. At 2500rpm, I read 65-70psi vs. dash gauge of >40PSI.
BTW...the dash water temp gauge is reasonably accurate. At 200, my dash gauge reads 200.
I thought if you had gauges, you'd monitor oil pressure as well.

Thanks for the info, I did'nt know that. I remember now on some of my past vehicles with the pressure gauges in the dash, they would display pressure increase with RPM. I assumed this pressure gauge was fairly accurate

Scored Piston
Sounds like a scored piston was there any blowby from the breather tube or dipstick I just had 2 engines with the same problem 1 had 3 scored pistons What oil filter were you using (not Fram I hope)
I had a similar sound a while back. Sounded like a spun bearing. Awful noise.
Somehow the adjustment screw had loosened up on the #1 exhaust valve. Was loose enough for the pushrod to go along side of the rocker arm. Fortunantly, the push rod wasn't bent. Removed the rocker arm to reseat the rod, set the clearance, and so far, all is well.
