This is what my dealer told me as well. They said they removed the pistons through the oil pan with the engine block in place. I didn't watch them do it, but this was their response when I asked if they had to pull the engine on mine. I didn't have a rod knock, but tons of crankcase blow-by and oil all over the underside of the truck. Oil level never increased, no fuel in the oil.

No way can the rods and pistons come out the bottom of the engine, with the crank still in place. They are R&R out the top. I don't know if you can get #6 out while the block is still in the truck without raising the cab.

Well they got the hoist for my truck, talked to them this morning. Since day one the truck has been serviced at a Dodge dealership. The 5k change was in Belvidere and the last @10k was at the dealer that is working on it now. So the oil and filter is Dodge. I have been going my the log book under sever (sp) duty. When this happened, no exhaust blow, boat & trailer clean, under & around truck no oil and oil level @ right spot.I will get an update after 3:00.

Update Day#3

They just called. The #2 rod bearing spun. They are getting a new short block & all the necessary stuff to fix it. Hopefully if all the parts come in, it may get done by end of next week. Not too bad. I am going up there to see it in the morning, I'll take pictures.

Since the dealer is in such a good mood - why don't you talk them into fire rings and studs for the head?

... hey - can't hurt to ask!

That is a good point, is there something I coud ask the service guy to do if he could. I have to go and get my son in a 1/2 hour, but I will get back on the web later tonight. I want to see how the turbo looks and my handywork installing the EGT probe.

What would be high engine speed? I would guess somewhere at or above redline? Also high engine speed would affect more than one wouldn't it?

With normal oil pressure it would take a few more RPMs than the 3100 or 3200 that its limited to now to hurt it. If you look, you can find other applications that it is set to turn up to 4200 rpms I belive!!

Update Day #4

Went up there this morning, man that's a big motor. They are just waiting for the parts to come in now. I took some pictures and upon approval will be on my gallery ( don't know how to put them in the thread ). Not a whole lot to see. I told them as long as everything works, no leaks, no scratches & no grease on the seats I'll be happy. Getting it all togeather and doing the break in will be tight for our La Crosse WI trip in August. Guess I'll have to make a couple of road trips and for safety reasons the wife & kid better stay home . The EGT hole location was dead center in the monifold, no bad for a rookie. The cylinders looked good to me, all black no pits or anything (1st diesel I've ever seen). The turbocharger was behind too much stuff to look at that. I am not sure if I could tell anything if I did look at it.They said everything else looked good.

So....you're going to install gauges??? Sounds like EGT is on the way, what about oil pressure, trans temp, water temp, etc.?

A side thought just occured to me: If you did spin one bearing, what was the root cause? Rod clearance, rod bolt torque, oil pressure, etc? If it was oil pressure, there could be several sources; oil filter, oil pump, etc. How do they know there wasn't an oil leak in the head that caused oil starvation & that bearing was just a weak link.

After they get it all together, I'd request (demand if necessary) a full oil pressure test, per factory specs, just to make sure there's not another engine failure looming.

HTH
