The only bad thing about it, is it is hard to explain to the State Patrol when they pull you over

Yeah, I bet that COULD be an issue in some states. Here in NM we have the castle clause when it comes to guns, basically that extends your PRIVACY to your vehicle just the same as your home. Even if we did not have the castle clause, we have open carry, and that extends to your vehicle with a weapon in plain sight.

Not that long ago I got stopped in one of those dui road checks. I had a rifle laying in my back seat. The officer asked me about my rifle, asked me if it was loaded . . I told him according to the law what was in my vehicle was none of his business UNLESS he felt I was involved in some crime and then he'd need a search warrant to boot.

He looked at me really funny, said I was the first person to answer him in that manner, then he repeated his questions . .

I fired back a question . . asked him why he stopped me, he replied that it WAS a DUI CHECKPOINT, then I probed him further and asked him if he felt that I was drunk or had been drinking . . he replied, no, not drunk, and not been drinking . . he handed me back my DL, registration and insurance card and again mentioned my rifle . . I told him again it was none of his business, and that if he continued to persue that line of questioning a couple things would happen - first, I would want his name/badge number, second, I would be making a call to my lawyer.

He thanked me for my cooperation and told me I could leave the DUI checkpoint.

You know, I am a relatively passive person UNTIL someone pushes my buttons, THAT pushed my buttons. I have had enough and am beginning to speak my mind about this kind of stuff.

I figure, if we all start to stand up some, maybe the message will be heard, and some backing off will take place. If I had gotten myself into trouble, I can afford the bail, and I can afford the lawyer, and I will take it through the needed distance.

Not everyone is as stupid as they seem to believe we are, and not everyone will succomb and toe the line as easily as others, and when I am where I was at that moment . . well, I let them know where I am coming from.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for those who take on these jobs, today's society is pretty wicked and we do need them, but they have to recognize that they have to follow the laws just as we do.

Stacey David did one a few years back, either on "Trucks", or "Gearz". Involved a welder, down on the bottom, under the boot. Don't remember much about parts source, though

If you are talking like the early 70's true MOPAR muscle car pistol grip I don't understand without modification how they would work. I will admit I haven't ever had my shifter out of the truck, but the old school style was just a long flat piece of steel with a grip on either side no threaded handle.

The bottom was just sandwiched in the shift mechanism.

That's where the welder came in. The shifter in the truck he did this on used 2 bolts, on the outside of the trans case, to attach the shifter handle. The holes were either re-drilled in the handle(as pictured above), or the bottom of the stock shifter was welded onto the bottom of the pistol grip shifter. All this was then buried behind a custom leather boot.

Sitting in Safeway library, waiting for Mama Bear, and spotted a rig in "Diesel World" with a pistol grip. Didn't get the chance to read up on it(didn't have my reading eyes with me), but it was definitely a pistol grip.

How do you remove the stock shifter handle? Does it just twist off?

I tried to starighten mine out (the shift pattern keeps rotating very slowly), but I feel like I'm going to break something if I twist too hard.

Maybe I'll put my old Hurst shifter on if I can get the original off.

the shift pattern is on a piece of plastic that "pops" into the hole. you can get it out with a small flat tip screw driver. if you take it out you will see a nut that is holding the shift **** on.

Somebody will correct if I'm wrong, but to pull the whole shifter arm, pull the boot screws out of the ring on the floor. Pull the boot up, and look underneath. There should be 2 bolts holding the arm onto a short stub, coming from the trans internals.

I don't remember exactly how many bolts or where they were, but when I changed the oil on my transmission, I removed the entire shifter and added iol from the interior. It was very easy pulling the shifter out and re-installing.
