How much smoke is normal, and soot stains...

OK, tonight a guy was following me rather closely. It just happened to be a PSD. So, I was leading, merging onto a busy freeway. I was tired of his lights in my mirrors, so I mashed it. It was absolutely awesome!! However, I also notice a HUGE plume of smoke billowing behind me, hazing up his lights. Granted, I don't get on it very often, so I can't say if this is normal or not. Anyone elses smoke like a wet fire when you mash it? Also, does anyone have heavy soot buildup directly above the exhaust tip? It's even turning my chrome rear bumper black/blue... I never experienced either of these traits with my '01 CTD, so I am a little concerned here... [undecided]

I never had either problem (if you want to call it that)...but mine is 'only' the SO auto. And I get on it often...I wish mine would smoke a bit, to choke some of the rice boys out.

I notice some smoke during a full throttle push running down the highway. Its easier to see at night. I wouldn't call it a smoke screen by any means, but it is useful in peeling the tailgaters off your butt. I'm not worried about it.

This weekend I also noticed a trace of blueing on the right rear bumper.

As far as smoke goes, the other morning I started her up in 10 degree temps without it being plugged in. She started and revved right up to the 1000 rpm idle, immediately, no 2 minute waiting rule. Plus, that was the first time she smoked/steamed out of the tailpipe during the morning startup. Normally there's barely a trace coming out of the tailpipe.

;D Not to worry, nightime allows you to visually see spent diesel as a fog or plume, rather than the black smoke during the day. If you have a High EGT problem, I would take notice, if not Smoke away!

Ya no need to worry, all my trucks do that at night when the headlights are shining through the exhaust fumes. My dmax's even did that if you mashed it hard enough.

I'm getting a lot of soot on the lower part of my rear fender and bumper. It may me due to the air flow around the rear mud flaps. In either case, I ordered a curved exhaust pipe extension. Perhaps I'll be able to find a position for it that will redirect the exhaust flow to cut down or eliminate the problem. I'll let the board know. ;D
