Black Smoke and Soot above the tailpipe

I bought my truck when it had 27,000 miles on it. It now has 37,000. I just changed the fuel filter at 33,000. I run about 9 oz. of power service (white bottle) for each tankfull. I changed the oil 1000 miles ago. It uses no oil. The problem has existed since the day I bought the truck.

The problem is: It smokes on start up, not white or blue, but rather gray to black. At start up it smokes for about 5 - 10 seconds and then quits. Additionally when I accelerate moderately hard (basically whenever it downshifts and I'm on the pedal) the smoke barrels out the exhaust. If you look, you can see it during the day but at night, you can really see it in the headlights behind you. Also, there is a constant layer of black soot above my tailpipe, on the side of the truck and the bumper.

I have been paying attention to other Dodge Diesels. I don't see the black soot like i have and other CTD drivers have made comments about how sooty mine is and how much it smokes for a stock truck.

I get about 18 mpg average, which I am OK with. I pull a 32 foot travel trailer when necessary without any problems. The truck always starts easy and runs flawlessly. Basically, there are no other problems.

Do I have anything to worry about? Should I have it evaluated? Is the smoke a sign of a bad injector? Is it possible that maybe I have had a bad injector since the day I bought the truck or is this smoke normal. It smokes quite a bit.

Thanks for whatever advice I get.

as far as the black soot on the bumper I also had this and got really really tired of cleaning it off every other day. When I got an exhaust tip put on the end, this got the tip out a little. No more issues with the soot. Mine smokes black too which you can see at night also and smokes lightly on heavy acceleration. I think this is normal for most diesels. If its heavy heavy smoke I got no clue.not much help just wanted to give you something.

Never smoking '07.

Mine never smokes unless I've got Smarty installed. Bob sent me the new update and I'm hoping it minimizes the smoke.

Sounds like normal puffs of black coal smoke. Some trucks do it more than others no two are alike. As long as it's not blue, white, or overly excessive like huge billowing black clouds from a smarty without the smarty I wouldn't worry about it. You're gonna see a haze at night if you're pouring it on even stock. Get one of those turndown tips to keep it from painting the bumper black.

Any diesel will smoke some when their cold. As to the soot and smoke on acceleration, thats perfectly normal. You don't have a problem.

Maybe someone had a programmer or something that got left on it before you bought it? Or like was said before - even if its stock its gonna smoke some - its a diesel.

My 06 is factory stock and has smoked exactly like you mentioned since day one. Surprised me at first to leave a black cloud at an intersection when I got on it once to miss a guy running a red light.

Mine has had a little soot on the bottom of the fender since new. It will smoke some cold, smoke when I get on it, seemed normal diesel stuff since it's black smoke. I am going to put a tip on to get the soot away from the fender. Mine runs just fine, no oil consumption, have used PS with every fill up.

I had the same prob with my 05 with soot on the rer bumper and sometimes on the quarter panel.
At first, I felt it was a badge of power.
Got tired of cleaning it off.
A turndown tip from Genos fixed that.
