how much play in ball joints

like the title says, how much play in the ball joints before they need to be replaced?? almost have the front end all redone and am still chasing terrible handling characteristics, checked the ball joints today and there is around a 16th of play up and down.. so this has to be too much no? going to pull the bilsteins out tomorrow and see if they are getting weak also. so far new steering linkage, end links, steering box, pitman arm, adjustable track bar, steering brace, steering stabilizer, and axle u joints all to no avail.. oh and also new tires that i switched to my dick cepek winters today which seemed to help a little, but still has excessive body roll when passing on the highway.... help

Dealer says .060 and .090. Forgot which is which. But, it sounds like a dealer cop out.
