How do you find out why the engine light is on?

Just bought a used 2006 3500 wth a 6 speed stick. I didn't get an owners manual with it. Gone maybe by the previous owner (unknown)

I have drove it home last thursday,(300miles/500kilometers) drove it around (a little) friday. Parked in the driveway all weekend. Started it up today and the engine light stayed on.
The other thing I noticed is a can't see anywhere where the glow plug light is. I never noticed one come on before. Although the truck seemed to start good.

So where can I get a owners manual and how can I find out why the light is on?

thank

Tom

No glow plug, grid heater. Lower left of dash, it'll only come on for a second unless it's below 40 degrees and even then ignore it, they'll start way below freezing without waiting for air temp to rise.

Cycle the key between the last two positions before start Key-On-Key Off, it's either 3 times or 5 time in 5 seconds, can't recall but that'll bring up any stored codes. Search here for whatever code comes up.

Check this out for an owners manual...

http://www.dodge.com/en/owners/manuals/

And how to check codes...

https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...s-t224833.html

And what they mean...

Hope this helps. You can order a new owners manual from the dealer if you want. If you bought the truck from a dealer, then I would ask them to provide one. I doubt they will now that you have it, but it's worth a shot.

A big thanks guys....

I'm going to hang on to those links! Thanks madhat

As it turns out the engine light has gone out.... (just as quick as it came on)but I will check to see if it stored a code in there!

Just a minor clarification. The wait to start light will not come on at all on an 06 unless it is below a certain temp. Don't want the guy thinking his is burned out or bad cluster.

I think the CEL comes on as a lamp test when you first turn the key doesn't it? Anyway, unless it's on steady, not a problem.
