How will I be able to get better fuel milage? I allready have an after market exaust and air filter.

 

Slow Down.

 

Yep, slow down makes a huge difference. Also, take-off slower and slow down earlier to stop. If you are driving on the highway keep it under 65mph and that will help things also.

 

In addition to what's been said. Quality fuel, air pressure up at all four corners, remove excess weight, and don't idle long.

I slowed down and eased up on the take off- and gained 2-3mpg!! I'm running approx 18-19 up and down mountains! But I have a question- running this way I rarely engage the turbo. Will that be detrimental in anyway? (besides sucking all the fun out of driving my beast!) I know we're supposed to run diesels at speed once in awhile to keep them in top shape (this is my first diesel so I'm just learning!)- so?

 

I learned that driving 65MPH on the highway helps a lot and use cruise control. Some parts of my area are 55MPH, so I run 55MPH and the fuel savings is noticeable. You can also try a programmer like the Quad Mileage Max Module or the Smarty on level 1 (fuel saver mode) Good luck!

MtnDodge, I think the worst thing for these turbos is shutting them down hot, so you should be okay. Hopefully someone else chimes in with some more info.

 

I don't think driving this lightly is good for our trucks, not mine at least. If I drive like a sissy for too long my truck runs rough, after I pull a load w/ the hammer down she runs alot better. Anyone else notice this?

 

yes i do for sure, i try to hook on as much as i can and work my truck to shape it up.

 

I do for sure, I notice a differinch after just pulling the camper!!

 

the ECM learns about how you drive and when you're loaded it learns a lot of different values than when it's empty and driven easy. I notice it too and sometimes unplug both batteries so it has to re-learn everything. I was loaded on one trip, hevy and got reasonably good mileage but when I returned and was running around empty it didn't run like it did before I left. I "reset" the ECM and it was back to its' old self. weird huh.

 

the 04.5 up is the hardest to mod for fuel mileage due to the timing of the third injection event , change the cam to a pdr cam add a smarty jr ,cfm+, grid heater delete, and turbo back 5" with a donoldson m 90535 muffler. this will give you the max at this time as soon as someone figures how to move the pulse we can get about two more mpg and cleaner oil

 

Advance your timing, drive no faster than 55MPH, slow on take off, coast to a stop and this should get you at least 2-3 MPG.

 

I'm sure every truck is different but ours is run easy 95% of the time and yanks a load (10-14,000#) occasionally. Never runs any different either way. 130,000km to date, 20-22 mpg (empty), no issues.

Only way I've found to save fuel is to leave the truck parked in the driveway... that doesn't mean I like to though...
