How do I find out my rear axle type ?

I am looking to replace my 4:10 with 3:73 ring and pinion, website lists 10.50 or 11.50 rear axles, how do I find out what I have ?

Also is OEM gears the way to go or is there anything with better quality.

That's a big deal. Perhaps someone on this board might trade with you.

I was going to trade up but I use this truck for work, I need all the reliability I can. The complete kit ring & pinion, bearings and seals from Dodge are $ 350, I rather go this way then cut some corners and find myself replacing it again few thousands of miles later which might mean 6 months since I average 8k/month.

Wow, that sounds impossible.

Great deal there.

i've replaced the gears on lots of vehicles... not myself, but had it done. i can tell you that dodge does not make the gears themselves, so buying them from dodge does nothing for reliability. find a "good" shop that does nothing but gears and see what they recommend. probably cheaper too. the best "deal" is not always the best "deal". i only go to one shop now and he gets all my business and i recommend him to everyone even though he is a bit more expensive, but he doesn't cut corners and will get it right even if he has to cut into his own profits to do it. Don't forget that you need to do the front axle as well... That requires pulling the hubs apart which can cost some big dollars if you damage them.

I found the parts on this site, http://www.wholesalemopar.com/parts.htm
I understand OEM parts are made from somebody else but I assume they are of good quality being that they last, I just don't want to end up buying cheap made stuff and replace it in 1 year or sooner.
If there are better brands I am happy to listen.

I understand I have to do the front end too but i can do it on a separate date, I have my front driveshaft disconnected, I can use 2wd low for backing up easy.
