How to: check transmission fluid on a 6 speed?
Ive been getting a lot of noise and viberation from my transmission. Looked for a way to check fluid and didn't find anyway of doing so. What s the process of doing so and if anyone else has had this problem...

Look on the driver's side of the tranny for the PTO cover (6 bolts). The bottom one is the fluid drain. Just to the rear of the cover is another bolt sitting all by itself, not holding anything. Take that out and and the fluid level should be right at the bottom of the hole (level truck, insert pinky). This is for the NV5600 on my '03 and I think your's is the same.

STANDARD PROCEDURE - DRAIN AND FILL
1. Raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove drain plug (1) on transmission (2) and drain fluid.
3. Install drain plug and tighten to 57 N·m (42 ft. lbs.).
4. Remove fill plug (1) on right side of the transmission (2).
5. Fill transmission even with the bottom of the fill hole.
6. Install fill plug and tighten to 57 N·m (42 ft. lbs.).
DIESEL ENGINE - G56 MOPAR® ATF+4 Automatic Transmission Fluid 1 Quart - 05013457AA 12.4 Pints 5.9 Liters

Before draining anything, I like to loosen the fill plug first. It's a 17mm hex if I remember correctly ('03 6 speed - may be different than yours).

Correct.
Also read here that the G56 likes to be overfilled by a quart and there's some long haulers on here that swear by adding Lucas trans treatment as the extra qt, FWIW.

your dmf has failed. replace with a southbend conofe. grit dog is correct, you must over fill by one quart to lube and cool the front bearing. mix one gallon sae 50 synthetic syncromesh transmission fluid with one gallon 5w-30 synthetic syncromesh transmission fluid, the g56 takes 6 quarts to full i quart over leaves i quart spare for when the red rubber boot on top fails you have make up oil. never have been smart enough to replace it at the same time i have the g56 out for the flywheel change.

Ok, it's taking a little more effort to shift to 2nd and reverse when stopped so I figured I'd change the fluid and found this thread via search.
To clarify, the post quoted mentions "syncromesh" which looks to be an Amsoil product but other threads refer to Royal Purple (Syncromax) - preference? It's all expensive so I don't want to buy wrong.
When I overfill thru the shifter, do it by removing the red boot and pour in around the stick or remove the shift tower assembly (4 inverted torx bolts)? If by removing the assembly, put the shifter in neutral?
Fyi, bone stock motor, Southbend single disc (G56-OFEK) and 140k miles. The clutch was replaced due to DMF failure @ 85k miles.

Just pour it in after removing the red boot. Check it for tears while you have it out. They are expensive to replace ($110), but there is a cheaper alternative you can find by searching here.
