HO engine question

I'm presently in the market for a CTD and thought I knew what to look for until I read another thread and am now confused. Are the 03-04 engines in a HO model or not? I thought some were and you had to look at the sticker on the top of the engine to figure out. I read elsewhere that the HO didn't happen until 04.5. Please assist. thanks

At first to get the HO you had to order a six speed. The HO option was not available with the 47RE automatic. When the 48RE automatic became available you could get the HO.

04 you could get the so or the ho 305/555. 04.5 you could get the 600 ft/lb engine.

To get a 'HO' or equivelent, just look at the engine plate and make sure HP is over 300 for 2003 and above.

In 03 this is what you could get.

Early 03 = S.O. with 47RE.

When the 47RE trannies were gone that year you saw some S.O. motors with 48RE trans.

Later on in 03 the H.O. motor had the 48RE.

The H.O. motor in 2003 was 305 Hp. 555 Tq.

The H.O. motor in 2004.5 was 325 hp. (I think that's right, I know it was a little more than 305 hp)

I looked for a long time for an 03 and found all of these combinations. If you find an 03, 305 hp, it always has a 48re or the 6 spd.

Hope this helps.

IMO, the only engine that is correctly called the HO is the 305/555. The SO/HO terms were to tell the two simultaneously available engine configurations apart. That was only in late '03 and the '04 model year up to 12/31/03. Starting with '04.5, (1/1/04), there was only one version available at any given time. It's not an SO or HO, it's simply an '04.5, '05, '06 engine. JOIBO! YMMV!

yes, you have the "High Output" 305/555 w/ the 48RE auto tranny. Great setup if your not working the 48RE to hard.

IMO the S.O was the 235/250hp 460/tq motor and the high output was the 305/555 Motor and then the 325/600 was know as the 600 series motor. But look at the build date on the door. Any truck built after 1/04 will have the 600/610 series motor. The lower Hp is the Cali emmision truck which was sold in CA,MA,ME and maybe one or 2 other states were people like to breath clean air

Funny, my '01 245/505 is considered an HO (also avail. that year was the SO of 235/460). Also only available with the DEE trans. All autos were in back of the SO.
