High Pressure Common Rail code P0148

My engine light came on yesterday and my truck was acting like it was starving for fuel on acceleration. I got the DTC - PO148 - high presure common rail. Has anybody had this problem and what was the fix? As I'm reading previous threads, looks like alot of lift pumps are being replaced. Does this code suggest that is the problem? If so is it covered under factory warrenty (52k)?

The po148 code is common when you play with pressure.According to your sig ,I don't see why it would throw it , but try erasing it and keep pressure close to stock.

I had problem with fuel contamination. Pull fuel filter and replace it and then with flash light check for any contamination in bottom of fuel filter housing. Will look like fine rust particles. If you see any particles in housing then fuel tank needs to come out and be cleaned. Remove fuel strainer in fuel tank and clean or replace. If you do a fuel volumn test usually will show 100mL less then spec. or more. Usually this will only show up on wide open throttle or when pulling a trailer since supply of fuel cannot keep up with load demand. The fuel volume for the model years late 2004 through 2007 is 590mL in 10 seconds. Be sure there is no air in the system will show up as bubbles in fuel. I purchased a clear hose (Home Depot) and put it on fuel outlet from filter housing the bottom line the other line is fuel return. Have someone bump starter, start the test only when fuel has reach end of hose. Use watch and 10 seconds fuel flow.

I used to get that code all the time, til I put in a pressure box. Basically adding pressure fixed the problem

changed the fuel filter and there are particals in bottom of housing. So the tank has to come out. Is this something i could do myself or is there special tools needed?

The tank comes out very easy.

You will almost always see particles in the bottom of the fuel filter housing. I clean mine out with a lint free cloth each time I change the filter. I bet what you saw is normal.

My question is how many miles on your truck? I would not think an 06 would need to have the tank cleaned yet unless you drive a lot and also in VERY bad conditions.

Dude, everybody get particles in the fuel filter housing, they are kinda brown and gunky, i would not worry about that. 0148 means the demanded ECM rail p and the actual rail p are not the same. Common stuff to check out is the lift pump, cp3, FCA, injector lines etc. Often it is due to a boost fooler that is on the truck, I have seen this twice. Before messing with mechanical stuff try to rule out programming, boxes etc. Jay

Dude, When you see particles in your fuel filter housing believe me the fuel strainer in tank is plugged up. The strainer in tank is small and doesn't take much to restrict the fuel flow. Do a fuel volumn test first to confirm fuel supply to CP3 pump. Min flow in 570mL in 10 seconds. Or you can chase your two nuts around like Got Boost suggests. at a little less than an 1/8 tank of fuel, the engine stalled out on me twice yesterday and was runnig real rough. my smarty was in stock position so that rules out the programer. made it to the fuel station and filled the tank up and I drove home with no problems or power loss. also, I set the smarty back to economy mode to see if the extrxa fuel demand would starve the rail and every thing ran good so far. I have a feeling when I get to a 1/4 tank the problem will come back. I agree with you bigiron, the fuel strainer is probably does have some restriction (occasional off road diesel). Is my lift pump in my tank? if so, do you think all the weight of a full tank of fuel helps push fuel through and when the volume is low the pump is on its own and cant push the required fuel because its in the early stages of failure. just a theory. should I do volume test now, while the truck is running good or wait till problem comes back?

The Smarty Jr on SW#1 does not affect overall fueling, it is just timing. So you shouldn't have any issues there. The only thing the SW#1 has to do with fuel is tq management, which allows it to fuel harder down low, but still on SW#1 its stock duration.

I changed 2 fuel modules last week for drive ability problems. Truck had no power climbing hills while towing. Owner was to other dealerships changing parts and not fixing the problem. I did a fuel volumn test and found it to be below specs. Why the other dealerships did not run this test I don't know. Customer called and said truck never ran this good. He lives in San Fransico, lots of hills. So check your fuel suppy before you do anything else. Will save you a lot of time and money.

Had this same problem again the other day myself (4th time in 4 months but first time in last 3). This is the first time I had it since changing out to the Airdog. Thought the Airdog would fix it. It always happens around 1/4 tank and I always ultimately have to shut the truck down and restart to get going again. I'm leaning towards crap in the tank clogging the fuel intake or the Quad. Currently I am testing the Quad turned off.
Here is the kicker. This most recent occurance threw no codes!!

Mechanic or not I've been seeing particles in my fuel canister for over 80,000 miles. You just wipe them out with a lint free cloth after removing the filter. Its not particles its mostly mold and I believe Dodge actually has a cool little vacuum tool to remove this when changing the filters. Not saying that its not the strainer. Just stating that particles / mold in the housing is common

Mine is at the dealer right now getting worked on. They said they can not run all the tests because I have the Airdog pump on there. Because it flows a higher rate than stock all their readings are off and then won't be able to tell whats going on. They were able to check a few things like the Fuel Control Actuator and it's working. So at least it's not that. I've told them to go ahead and drop the tank to see if there is junk in it. While that is something I could do myself, I really really don't want to! If there is nothing in it, then they want me to go back to the stock pump to run the tests. And I'd rather not do that as well.

Just to follow up on my history, the first two times it died I got the code P0148, then last 3 times it died I got no codes. The last two times it died I had the Quad turned off. It has happened with both stock pump and the Airdog. It's done this over the course of about 8000 miles.

Funny thing, he did tell me I need bigger injectors because of the higher fuel flow, I don't think I need to go there yet. LOL
