Help! White Smoke!

2007 Cummins 5.9L with 18,400 miles. Daily commuter at 80 miles per day.

Started the truck yesterday afternoon and engine stumbled, idled rough, and blew a huge amount of white smoke. Ran fine once warmed up with a slightly rough idle.

Same routine this morning, engine stumbled, idled rough, and blew a huge amount of white smoke. Ran fine once warmed up with a slightly rough idle.

I buy fuel from the same high volume diesel station. No warning lights on the dash. Last time I used additive was about 5,000 miles ago. I dumped 1/2 a bottle of Power Service in this morning hoping it would help.

Any ideas?

Sounds like injectors to me. I'd get it to the dealer asap since you're under warranty.

Sounds like an injector is missing. Check oil level on dipstick to see if its normal and see if you can smell fuel in oil. Starting with some injector cleaner is a good idea but you might want to change the fuel filter also to help clean the fuel system.

Okay, I am starting to get confused...

Called my dealer this morning and spoke with the service department. They seem to think that it is a pcm flash issue because the truck runs fine after warm up. They told me to go ahead and tow this weekend but to make sure I bring it in next week for them to have a look.

???

PS. I was going to tow my 5th wheel to the lake this weekend (100 mile round trip).

They do have a dealer flash for rough idle/white smoke at start up for the later 3rd Gens. Hopefully thats all you need. Again, if your oil is fine your probably alright to drive this weekend. But I would keep an eye on it to make sure you dont have an injector acting up.

Thanks for the help guys!

We decided to play it safe and cancel the trip to the lake (lost 2 nights rv space). I will let you know what happens next week.
