Help with P0191 code (questions)
Folks,
My truck is a 2004.5 305/600 6 speed. virgin stock
My check engine light came on the other morning when I cranked it up( cold & didn't let the glow plug light go out)
I checked the code when I got home... P0191 Fuel rail pressure sensor.
My question(s)...
How long before it quits?
Can I pull the negative battery connections to clear the codes to see if it is for real?
Where would you suggest I buy from if I had to order a sensor? I have a connection at a dealer.
I replaced the lift pump a few moinths ago.
I have about 160 K on the truck and only changed out the water pump and lift pump.
thanx for any advice y'all have for me.
David

Id clear the code, and see if its does it again, these trucks act funny especially whens its cold. If it does then Id start looking at replacing it.
Second, your engine doesnt have glow plugs, the coil looking light is your heater grid located between the intake horn and intake plenum (sp?). All is does is warm your intake air.

I had the P0191 code four times when my truck was new. First time the dealer just cleared the code, couldn't find anthing wrong. Second time they changed the relief valve. Third time they changed the sensor. Fourth time they did a flash. Have not had it since. The first two times were in February/March 2006, The second two a year later, all during some really cold weather. The last time I had another code coupled with the P0191, can't remember what it was, but the second code is why they did the flash.
Their assumption was that the valve stuck open, so they changed it. Then the assumption was that they got a bunch of bad sensors, so they changed it. When they did the flash, their assumption had to do with rail pressure variables. My dealer told me that "frankly too many people leave the key on too long before starting their truck", that alone can set off the P0191 code. He also told me that you can throw the code if you start the truck before it completes at least one heating cycle. The flash they did resets the 'time' variable for key on to start time.
I have always waited for the wait to start light to run it's warming cycle, light to go out, then I start the truck. Maybe some take longer than others to cycle? Maybe some cycle before the plenum is heated sufficiently - early light out. Maybe you threw the code because you didn't wait for a full cycle to complete? Or, maybe you will need to look into the valve or the sensor and see if one/another is not functioning correctly? I would clear the code and see if it happens again.

I pulled both negative cables off the batteries for a while and the check engine light is still on and the code is still there.
But... the radio presets didn't change or the clock... so I am wondering if I need to disconnect the positive and negative connections on the batteries.
hmmm...
