HELP! Oil filter change

I have never cussed so much! I bought the webbing/ratchet filter remover and I cannot get this stupid oil filter off! After trying for approx. 2 hours, the ratchet remover just broke!

I followed these instructions --- with NO LUCK! This thing is stuck on and its really edited by admin me off. HELP? SUGGESTIONS?

if its the factory filter, I wish you luck. I finially drove a screwdriver through mine and got it loose that way. But, be ready for a mess. Before I drove the screwdriver through, I punched a hole in the bottom and drained it.

That is correct. Lefty loosey, Righty tighty as they say. I use a filter hat that fits on the bottom of the oil filter. 1 long extension and a 3/8 ratchet is all you need.

My buddy is on his way with another strap. If we break that one, I will have to get one of the filter hats you mentioned about.

Thanks

The metal cap wrenches or "filter hats" work great. Using a long 3/8 extension, I get the filter loose and then put a large freezer ziplock bag up over the filter. When I take the filter off, it can drop into the bag and the oil spills out in the bag. I got the cap wrench from advance auto.

I purchased a "chain wrench" at Autozone for a water pump job last year. I bet that thing would get it off.... Might deform it, but it would come off. Might make a mess too..

Craftsman makes a filter that goes on the end of the filter like a "hat" type but has three engagement points. That seems to work the best. The filters are really put on tight at the factory.

All the engines are clear coated at the factory (Cummins Plant) before they get shipped to Dodge so this clear coat covers every thing and causes the factory filter to be very hard to get off. I have used Channel Locks on filters in the past but being I had heard how hard the factory filter is to get off, I took it in to have someone else bust up their hands getting it off. I have also used a screwdriver punched though the filter to get some filters off but have from time to time ripped them in two so be careful if you try this.

Yeah - my first one was a real pain too... I have the cap wrench, and it did do the job - finally. I think - if memory serves me correctly - I finally had to put a breaker bar on the end of my 3/8 multiple extension to cap wrench contraption before it'd come off.

My filter "hat wrench" uses a 1/2 inch ratchet...My first one was a little tough, but she gave in to the bigger ratchet!
