About a month ago I purchased an 03 3500 with a 6 speed. Was having no problems with it until about a week ago. When I went to take off it would sputter out and almost die, acting like it was not getting fuel. I hadn't yet changed the fuel filter, so I did that. After doing this it didn't do it for a week or so. But yesterday it did it again. It has done when the engine has been hot and cold, so that doesn't affect it. I need to mention that is very random when it does. Like I said above it did it yesterday and today I drove it 2.5 hours and ran great. Does this sound like my lift pump is going out to you guys?

Do you have any codes? Turn your key on(don't start) then off 3 times, on the third time keep the key in the on position and check for codes in the odometer window. It will say "done" when complete.

CHeck Engine Light on? (as mentioned above) Try and put a gauge in line before the injecton pump to check for pressure. @ idle the lift pump should be @ 7+psi.

I did the key 3 times thing and it did give me a code, P 2269. What does this mean though?

I could check, but then I would have to kill ya Seriously though, my book is at the shop, and by the tie I get it, someone else wll have chimed in. If not, then I will have to go get it for ya.....

I did some research here on this website and found that the code I recieved P2269 stands for water in fuel. This reminds the water in fuel light came on a couple weeks back, I drained it using the yellow know and the light went out. Could there some how be a clog or something not letting all the water out and causing my truck to sputter out. Thanks

Check your fuel filter then. its probably bad.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to change it.Would it go bad in 2 weeks with some bad fuel with a lot of water in it?

Most definitely. It could go out immediately with conditions like that, and you'd be surprised how much trouble a fuel filter could cause.

Fuel filter is a very important maintenance item on diesels.

I will try that I have a feeling it will not permanently fix it though. I've did this once and it seemed to helped but a couple weeks later it was doing it again.

Maybe you could drain your tank (run it close to empty) and start fresh with good diesel, an additive (your choice), replacement filter, and if you can, run a line test and see if your pump pressure is stable. If you still have issues, your pump is most likely on the way out.

When you say drain it, do you mean just run it really low or actually drain the tank. What kind of additives would you guys suggest. Also, it's probably the lift pump right (I hope) because the injection pumps I have seen are really expensive.

If it was giving me that much trouble I would run it low on fuel and drop the tank to take a look and clean if necessary. If it is a long bed I would do the fuel tank vent mod. If dirt/water got in the tank this is also another possible source of the problem.
