Hard start, dealer says turbo & injectors -- have ?

I am asking this for a friend who has an '03 QCSB 4x4 6spd. Took it to the dealer to have it flashed due to hard start (there was a TSB on this but I don't have the number) but they say it needs turbo and injectors. Dealer claims compressor wheel is cracked and that the injectors are leaking. 1600.00cnd for the turbo, 5000.00cnd for the injectors, and 1300.00 labor. The question is how does this sound $ wise for oe parts, ( that is a hard pill to swallow) or is now the time to do some performance upgrades? And if so what turbo and inj.? The truck is totally stock no box or program and his daily driver. I am going to make some calls to my connections and see if I can get a better price on the parts but I suggested to look into upgrades. Any thoughts and what would you suggest?

Thanks Darren

If the warantee is up or they aren't covering it under warantee, then save some money and UPGRADE! No way I pony up that kind of money for a stock turbo and injectors!

After market turbo is anywhere from $1500 and up sticks are around $1k in the body's aren't shot... I would get a hold on Don M and have him do the sticks and you can get a good turbo anywhere.. Just deciding on what size he wants is the only decision he'll have to make!!! Tell the dealer to go fly a kite!!!

HTB2 Street Stock 62 about $1360. Don M Flux 1's $1100 plus $100 (approx.) per injector for repair. Stickin' it to the dealer and having far better parts, priceless.

Thanks guys. No warranty its all his to look after. Looking at the prices you have been posting I think he will going aftermarket. Probably have to buy out of the US on this though, the local guys want a pretty penny even with our dollar trading so good. 4600.00 for injectors (new Bosch 50hp), and 2100.00 for turbo (not sure which it was) cnd. dollars. I'm going to make a few more calls (Piers, Don M) and do a little more research.

Thanks Darren

Is he sure warranty is up?? Here in the states the warranty on the Cummins side is 100,000 miles. How does that compare to Canadian warranty? If any chance of warranty it should be just the $100 dollar deductable. Not trying to beat a dead horse but had to ask just to be sure. And if so it would cover turbo and injectors.

He must be over the 160 000km (100 000 mile) warranty limit. Call piers, there way more reasonable on prices compared to the locals.

Just had the Turbo replaced in Kenai Alaska at the dealer. $721US for the rebuilt turbo + $265 core charge. This was done under warrenty. (One hour labor)

Your right BlueDually over the 160000km. Piers didn't have a turbo that they would recommend, he said everything they had was too big - not enough supporting mods on the truck to spool it. But they had a good price on the injectors. Even Cummins in Edmonton had a better price on a brand turbo than the dealer had. Bark, you would think that with the way the cnd. dollar is trading that we would get some better pricing like that but they still stick it to us Canucks. Now I just have to see what my buddy wants to do. Thanks for the replies.

First off are they sure the injectors are shot? I just had mine in i have a 03 quad 4x4 The fuel pressure switch was shot and leaking and the cross over tubes were leaking. That gave me a hard start and bad fuel milage. First they thought the injectors were bad but i asked them to check the cross over tubes and of course i was right they tighten them no problem. Saved me 1200 bucks.
