Where the heck is the grease fitting on the u-joint closest to the transfer case. I have a sticker saying to lube it at every oil change, with a little arrow pointing to it. HELP!

I've read that a few of the early '05 don't have the fitting, don't know for sure. It's very difficult to spot even when you know it's there and have a pretty good idea where to look. As someone once pointed out, Dodge wouldn't spend $.07 to put on a warning sticker if the fitting wasn't there. Obviously, since a goodly portion of dealer techs don't know or don't care about lubing the fitting, it probably will go a long time without servicing. Likely well beyond the warranty period.

You need a needle fitting on you grease gun to grease the center of the CV joint. Look for it and you will see it.

 

It is not a standard fitting. As mentioned, you need a needle to grease that thing. You will have to use a bright light and rotate the shaft a little at a time to see it. Its aluminum and will shine with a bright light if its not covered with crud. Look in the very center of the joint in the forward section. You are not greasing the u-joint itself you are greasing a ball and socket in the very center.

After 4 oil changes at the dealer and assuring me it was taken care of, I finally decided to double check myself. Not a shot of grease anywhen, in the joint or in the tie rods.. In my mind its a poor design and the engineer that dreamed that one up ought to have to sleep with it every night.

 

like said you will need a needle point grease adapter.

 

This joint is called a double cardan joint. It is made up of two u-joints with a trunion in between. You are actually greasing the trunion in the middle. Because of clearence problems with this kind of joint, there is no room for a regular style zerk fitting. There is a small cup in the center of this trunion that pushes inward when you apply a needle tip grease gun fitting to it. It can be pretty frustrating to deal with, but it will take grease if you keep after it.

I greased everything today. The most aggravating part for me were the u-joints on either side of that trunion those were a real pain.

 

The Mods should sticky an article with that picture of the grease spot on the front driveshaft..it seems like every other day there is a post asking where it is

 

Great research Alk!! That is the best picture of this joint that I have seen.

 

Pictures 1 and 2 show the injector needle that I use - it works good.
Pictures 3 and 4 show that grease went into the fitting. I hope his helps.

 

Once I found mine and greased it, I put a blob of grease on top of the fe-male zerk. Then I hit that area of the joint with a red spray bomb. Now finding the zerk to grease is alot less of a hassle. Skinner.

 

Mine looked like a dimple in the casting, until I cleaned it off. It didn't look like that picture until it was clean.

 

looks to me that the needle in your pics put grease everywhere but in the hole.
That angle cut needle is not what is putting the grease in that hole. You need one that is a little biggerand has an end that looks like this >
