Got pyrometor in.Scared of temps!

Well I put it before the turbo and I can get it to 1,100 deg just punching it in 6th gear on the freeway. How is it going to be pulling 11,000 lbs up 7% grades?
I had a thread a week or so ago about holding 4th gear at redline for 5-10 minutes. I must have been hot as he'll.
I am bone stock and eventually getting a Jr but for now I am thinking its going to be real hot towing next time.
What are your thoughts? I should also mention that I am at 600-700 deg just going down the hiway.
Thanks for your input.
Phil

I think you'll have lower temps with higher RPM in a lower gear.

don't worry about it! after all,
how many problems does any body actually have because of EGT issues ..........i think low tire pressure causes more problems
seriously, since i've been a member of DTR the incidence of engine damage because of high EGT's are very few..... not saying it doesn't happen, but it's pretty rare

Your lugging the engine is why it jumps that high. As long as you gear down when your rpm's drop you will be fine towing.

The temps at cruise are just about perfect.

If you haven't yet, get yourself a boost fooler that will allow the turbo to build more boost. That will help cool your EGT's down. The 600 series engines are good for 1550 degrees EGT for a couple of minutes. If your stock you should be good.

Coming back from Flagstaff a week ago I hit 1450 breifly on the Camp Verde hill. But most of my hard climbs I'm at 1200-1400* just to maintain 55-65 mph(I could go faster but why push it). That's pulling a 10k toyhauler. No problems yet. Just think of how many people out there just hook a trailer up and hammer down not knowing or caring what their egt's are and you dont see melted trucks on the side of the road.

Sounds like normal temps. You will be hard pressed to burn it up while stock but you are correct to pay attention to the EGT. When you see it climb up while pulling then you gear down, better then just using RPM or sound as your guide to changing gears.

As mentioned a boost fooler is a nice option to help build and maintain your boost levels.

How much more boost will you get with a boost fooler with a stock truck. While climbing the hills mine will stay at a constant 30psi. And how much will it lower the egt's?

I'm definetley not lugging it but I'll just have to see how it goes I guess. I know this is not the performance forum but does the Smarty really bring the temps down?
And thanks again for your responses

Are EGT's really something we should be worried about in a stock truck?? If so why does the factory not have something built in to the computer that when it senses the temps getting to a certain point it will automatically lower the rpm's (auto only) or increase boost? And say you did wreck an engine in a stock truck because of too high EGT, can they void the warranty on it, I would doubt it, but it seems people are always worried about them so why isn't the factory worried about it?

With my boost fooler i hit 42psi on the stock turbo, but can still peg my pyro at WOT in 6th. I wouldnt be to worried on a stock truck though.

Yes, I installed the Smarty Jr. and it did lower the EGT's. They are a whole lot more managable. They can still get up there if you are not paying attention though!

As said, just gear down. When I'm towing and pulling a grade, if it's a short hill I'll stay in 6th. But if it's a longer grade (that takes more than maybe 20 seconds to crest) then I'll gear down. Keep the engine over 2000rpm.

I dont think so. i pulled with my truck for over a year with no gauges. after getting gauges i have not changed my driving habbets at all. my pyro is post turbo and pulling the same hill i always do. i can see 1000 1100. so on a stock truck i feel safe.
