Thumbs down Good oil for 5.9

New to dodge 5.9 diesel. I have a 2004 2500. Just wanting to know a good oil to use. Live in central cal, irrigated desert. I pull a 30 foot fifth wheel, a little over 8000 lbs. Also is there a good fuel additive to use, thanks

Lots of stuff out there and everyone likes a certain brand. I have had good luck with 15w40 Rotella and Valvoline in several diesels I have owned over the years. Am hearing lots of good things about the 5w40 synthetics out there. Seems theres a few different diesel synthetics out there. I know Rotella has one and I think Mobil and Delvac as well. All can be bought at Walmart.

I have always use Power Service fuel supplement in my diesels and its worked great for me.

I also use Power Service diesel kleen in my 05 and have since my first few months of ownership were plagued with rough idle on start ups. The dealer replaced two injectors and it still occasionally idled very rough for a minute or two on start up. I put the recommended amount of Power Service in and from that day forward I have not had any rough idle, this was nearly 5 years ago.

I have been using amsoil heavy duty marine oil in the 15/40 for over a million miles in three different trucks with no issues at all.

I change oil and filter then at @6-7k miles I change the filter and add the makeup qt. At @12-14k I change the filter and add the make up qt. At @18-21k I change the oil and filter and have the oil analized. Also I am just using the fleetguard LF3894 filter. Like I said above, been doing this for over a million miles....HTH

Rotella 15W40 is the only motor oil I've used in all 4 diesels that i've owned.

As far as oil goes, can't go wrong with the Delo 400 LE they sell at most any Costco.

Here's some good reading. I'll switch to full syn when I'm out of semi syn. I know petro does fine but this article sheds some new light on oil
grades. Craig

Engine oil basically comes in three flavors: petroleum based, semi-synthetic, and pure synthetic. AFAIK, the only pure synthetic diesel oils are Redline, Royal Purple, and Amsoil. Everything else on the shelf that's labeled "Synthetic" is actually a modified dino oil - commonly called a semi-synthetic.

The synthetics cost twice as much, and have two real advantages - heat management and longevity

Oil is predominantly heated by rpms', and isn't that big of a deal in the average light duty diesel.

A straight dino oil will easily last 10K miles. If you want to go more miles between changes, then switch to a synthetic. Otherwise stick to the cheaper Dino oils.

Many people use a semi-synthetic, and change every 5-8K miles. They think they're doing something good for their engine. In reality, they're doing something good for the oil salesman, and that's about it. No performance or durability advantage, but the wallet sure is lighter.

I use Valvoline, as recommended by Cummins. My UOA shows I can easily go 14,000 miles between changes. For me, that's about once a year.

I also watch the sales, and then pick up 3-4 gallons at a time.

Mobil 1 TurboDiesel for most of 145K mi. Oil and filter every 5K mi. I use 5%Biodiesel probably every other tank. Engine runs quieter and for lubricity.
