going crazy or is there a knocking sound?

I was driving around in my 600 today and noticed a slightly different sound from the engine. My friend thought i was insane because he didnt hear anything but i know my truck and this sound is odd. it sounds like a slight knocking sound and when im driving through town at about 10-20 mph i'll roll down the windows and my exhaust is sputtering. i cant really describe the sound in depth but its a slight knock in the engine at times and a sputtering exhaust at low speeds. Almost like an old chevy 350 knockingf sound. Any thoughts?

Do you use any fuel additive? If not try a double dose of Power Service or Stanadyne PF in your next couple of tanks of fuel. My truck has a pretty good knock mostly at idle but it really quieted down after I started using Power Service. I think this crappy fuel we get is really subpar because I noticed a big difference in sound with the additive.

Your not crazy!
I swear My truck sounds different everyday!
Then again I live in Ok. wear the temp is 68 one day and 23 the next.
I started using the PS additive and it seems to help a little.
Still with the cold mornings and winter fuel mine can get a pretty good
tapping sound at idle.
This is my first CTD and I'm used to the sound of PS ford's.
Part of my problem is that this engine is so quiet compared to my old
ford that I hear every little sound

I had a knock in my 600 too. Had it in four different times, two of the four the dealer sent it to Cummins. They replaced all six injectors, two rocker arms and a fuel line. The knock was still there. They told me to use fuel additive due to carbon build up, but that didn't help. So the other day I ordered the Mopar cold front cover and put it on. Then I changed my oil, air filter and fuel filter. Now the knock is gone. I wonder if the cold front and the new fuel filter made the difference. My guess is yes. I have 19,300 miles on the beast, so the fuel filter was due to be changed according to the service manual. Just an idea.

I change my fuel filter with every oil change and is has not seemed to help
as far as the ticking sound goes.
I do think it does it more in the cold weather. It is not a real load noise so
I haven't worried about it to much as a matter of fact if I open the hood and
try to listen for it it is hard to hear over the engine but from inside the
cab you can definitly hear the ticking.

I quess I need to take it in and have them look in to it just in case it
is a problem with the injectors. (I've read some pretty bad horror stories
due to failing injectors)

Mine has a knocking sound too. But what is funny is i can either accelerate or let off completly and it will go away. And i can't hear it at idle. Then it may take a bit for it to come back. I thought it was my Juice but now i don't think it is. I have been using the white Power Service since the weather got cold I think i will double up and go with the white and silver next time i fill up and see if that helps.

Mine got louder than a 2nd gen one day out of nowhere. I thought it was bad Diesel. I took it to dodge and they told me the numder 6 injector went out. They told me there going out on all the 04's.They put a different one in and now some days it knocks quietly and some days it sounds really good. I guess it's the weather.

a pressure box will amplify the sound. take of your dr.p box and drive it for a few days , it will go away eventually. if you put the box back on it will show up a few days later. a pressure box is hard on injectors.

Mine will sometimes make a slight knocking noise, but it seems to go away with a fresh tank of fuel, even though I use Stanadyne with every tank. From what I understand the multi-stage injection to make it quieter will turn off in certain conditions, it seems to when it's fairly cold for instance, and although it makes more racket it's 'just going home' to the sound of the older generation of engines. Sometimes a new fuel filter helps, as I seem to get less than 10k out of mine. Just guesses though.

Can anyone confirm this It sure seems to make sense because mine was fine when I got it then it started to knock, went back and forth for a while now seems to knock all the time " at idle" runs and sounds fine under load. Only bothers me because it changed. My 03 sounded like that all the time so it did not bother me. My 2000 did not bug me at all and we all know how they sound, just want to know what is normal?
