Is it getting louder????
When I bought my 04 CTD 4x2 QC, the dealer explained how DC made the motor more quiet.......The dealer claimed the motor was 85% quieter at idle and 65% quieter at hwy speeds. After driving this truck, I never doubted what he told me. It is by far the quietest Diesel motor I've ever heard. I now have about 2400 miles on my truck and it seems like it's not as quiet as it was the day I purchased it. Is this possible? or am I just dreaming again.
And to clear the air, I don't mind the clatter of a Diesel motor. I think it sounds good.

Could be that you are just getting more acustomed to the sould. Go ride in one of the older diesels then ride in yours. I think mine may seem to be louder too.

Mine kind of makes a throb at high speeds that I don't think was there before. I'm hoping it isn't the rear end problem other trucks have had.
The thing apparently came from the factory with low oil level in the transfer case and both axels, which weren't (I hope) low enough to damage anything?

Most likely you are just getting use to it. I think some times mine might be a little louder. But then I go and drive one of out 2 gens (2000 & 2001) and then I know their is a big difference. You can't even here the 03 idling next to one of them.
On a side note, putting an order in on a 2500 today to replace the 2000. It will be the 600 of course with a 48RE, it dad's truck, carries a boss V-Plow around also, no fun plowing with a stick

I have the impression that mine is louder now than it was when new, it has over 13k now, but it seems to be due to at least a couple of factors. It's usually colder now (winter) than when I bought it (late spring) and it seems that it's truck character is more pronounced when it's cold; it's louder at start up, has a stiffer ride, tires seem to make more noise, and the drivetrain seems to whine more. Stanadyne helped the start up noise. It seems to get louder when it gets close to an oil change, mine are at 3750, and Delvac 1300 made it noticeably quieter than the dealer oil. I have the impression that the pilot injection takes a while to settle in as sometimes it seemed a lot noiser than others. A couple of friends have new Laramies with autos, mine has a manual, and theirs seem quieter. I think that the autos are quieter, and that maybe the Laramie has more cab insulation.

Both the Gen II & Gen III CTDs I have owned are noticeably louder when the outside temperature drops. The Gen II was more sensitive to the temperature drop. If it got below fifty degrees F it was a bunch louder. Maybe someone could chime in with the exact reason they are louder in colder temperatures. I don't think it is just colder oil because they are still louder even when they are completely warmed up and at full operating temperature.
