Gear indicator issue?! Help needed!

Hi Guys,

My second thread, I thought my issues were related but this is a separate issue so Ill take this in a new thread.

My gear indicator square is going haywire. Usually works perfect when I start her up but after a minute or two its starts clicking and flashing.
Got a video of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IotAGczZ5hw

This dosent seem to affect the shifting thou.

I ordered a new sensor, changed it tonight with no improvement!

New sensor, have resynced the cable a dozen times, took some time to get the indicator square to correspond with the actual gear being selected.

But where do I go from here? Is this an adjustment issue?

No warning, teh manual for the 48re says:

The Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) has 3 primary
functions:
² Provide a PARK/NEUTRAL start signal to the
engine controller and the starter relay.
² Turn the Back-up lamps on when the transmission
is in REVERSE and the engine (ignition) is
on.
² Provide a transmission range signal to the instrument
cluster.

New swnsor and newly adjusted it works like a charm when i start her but as soon as i driving the square starts flickering around D, works fine in R and P etc. Could the comb on the valvebody be worn?

Is there any way do just disable the square?

If it's hard to pull out of park, it might be the ball bearing/spring that sits in the valve body bore and selects the rooster comb notches. The stock valve body is a casting and the bore wears, allowing the ball bearing and rooster comb to rock/move.

Here's a video showing the problem and fix.

Here's a link to the repair part.

Thanks for the reply 55_Cans!

No problem with the gear lever, it corresponds with the gear chooser on the trans perfectly ( and after adjustment and new senors the indicator box also follows the choosen gear)

But when in D when I drive the square flickers?! Its really annoying!
Dont know it its dangerous thou, dont think it does anything but i want it fixed!

Finally, I never thought I would say it but I solved it! Put the truck on hoists and went under with the motor running.. Unhooked the gear cable and the thing was still doing the flickering!? => Not an adjustment issue. At this point I went mad cause the only thing that was left was the internal comb inside the transmission so I banged my fist at the dashboard and then I actually got a reaction from the square!

Turns out that the circut board for the gauges was bad - again. My tachometer died not long ago and all I needed to do was unscrew it and screw i back and it was fine again.

And the same thing with gear indicator! =) Now it works again!

But I still think its strange that it only happened when the engine was running..
If something is glitchy it should always be glitchy..

But now Ill have a celebratory rum!

Didn't know what year your truck was but 06's have cluster issues.

If you search "06 Tach Fix" or "06 Tach Issues" it gives details of the fix. Its a cold solder joint during the solder reflow process. Most people solder the pins they think look flakey, then they also shim the circuit board so it doesn't bend and so it isn't under stress.

Good going on your fix and reward
