Gas engine pinging noise
The dealer will fix what ever is wrong under my extended warranty. I know how the truck ran an sounded before this noise and that is what I will accept back. I did notice something funny driving back home. I went over a steep overpass cruise set at 50 an when coming down from the top the truck bucked about six times. Never felt that before, truck was in overdive an normally it just slows engine speed with the cruise on. Will take the same route back to dealer and see if it does it again an tell Em what happened. Was like an engine miss but truck rpm was dropping to maintain cruise speed.
Got the truck back from the dealer yesterday. This is what they said was making the noise. 1. Lifters out of adjustment, adjusted and most noise gone but still noisy. 2. I was told they than found a vibration coming from one of my aftermarket accesories that I mounted. Told the cable was vibrating along the engine firewall. Repositioned cable and noise gone.
Well yesterday and this morning when the engine is cold I still can hear the tapping noise but way way less than before. Once engine is up to full heat I can than barely hear it upon light acceleration. I am going to go over the truck this weekend and see if anything under the dash or behind the engine is making this noise. My aftermarket stuff is just pyro, boost and trans temp guages and BD shift enhanser.
I only have a few thousand miles and two weeks left on my 7/70 warranty. Now I am concerned that I might still have a problem. The noise sure seems like a slight engine rattle issue and not a rub or vibration type noise. They ordered the steering recall part so I have to go back again and will go before my warranty is up if I do not find anything this weekend.

Well back to the dealer the truck goes Friday, warranty expires Monday. Pinging rattle noise was noticable cold but almost gone when hot. This morning 50 degrees and the engine sounded like it would rattle itself apart. Light to moderate acceleration loud as could be, hard acceleration and noise almost goes away. Fifteen miles of driving noise still there just not as loud. What the heck can this be. If I had a gas motor I would say it is preignition with an exhaust leak. Could a valve be rattleing in the valve seat or something with an injector doing this. They adjusted the valves since that is where they thought it was at. Could this be a piston knock that get quieter the hotter the engine gets? I will post next week what they find.

Took a friend for a ride at lunch today and he said yup sounds like a gas engine pinging. At high idle he said the noise is coming from the exhaust side. He was surprised that how the noise would come and go at different throttle speeds while driving and would get a little quieter as the engine warmed up. At idle sounds like a regular engine should, but driving under light or normal throttle the loud rattle starts.

Yesterday I leave work the rattle noise is there big time, drive for 15 miles and park truck for about 1 hour at a Dr appointment. Come out drive home no noise, ran and sounded just like it has for the last 7 years. This morning loud as hell rattle again. As an A & P mech I am freakin baffeled but than again I am not a diesel mech. It has to be something with a sensor drastically changing the timing/fuel or an internal engine problem (piston ring etc) that heat soaks and the noise goes away or at least hardly noticable. I have had three mechs in my truck from work and all say the same thing (gas engine timing rattle with an exhaust leak).

Well Friday after driving truck for about 2 hours noise completely goes away. Dropped truck off at dealer so they could look at it Saturday. Just got a call that they tested it Sat and this morning and no noise. So now I am on my way to pick it up and I have no more warranty. This is driven me nuts. One day it rattles like it is gonna blow up and than runs fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did the dealership ever experience the issue? If so the issue was documented prior to the warranty expiring and you should be good.
If not get a Ultra Gauge for $69, it can show you each of the suspect sensors and you might get an idea on whats up.

Thanks I will pick one up. Got the truck back and is quiet an runs fine. They will not cover anything outside warranty but there work which is just the valves. I guess I can forget about an internal engine problem it must be a sensor like u said. Do any of the sensors have to be dealer programmed or r they all just plug an play. Thanks for the Insite of where to look next. It still amazes me on how it can sound like ready to blow to quiet. Rock
