g56 tranny question

Hi there folks. I have 2004.5 with 220k on it and my manual 6 speed is starting to get hard to get into gear when starting out. Once rolling it is much easier. The clutch was change out at 175k. It is also getting harder to down shift. This is not a grinding the gear thing it just doesnt want to slip into gear like you cannot find it. Any thoughts out there. Is it looking like I might need a rebuild and how much does that cost.
Thanks for you help

Your 04.5 has the NV5600 not the g56

Sounds like the synchros are getting worn. Not sure the cost on that would be though.

Thanks for the info about the model. Does this mean a rebuild or is this a minor fix.

Thanks

Most likely a rebuild. If you can pull the tranny it will save you some decent $$ on labor.

It may just be a pilot bearing starting to seize, and not letting the input shaft stop completely.

After you guys gave me the right tranny info I was able to search a little bit more. I couldnt get a feel on how often folks change there gear oil. I had it done about 40k ago but have owners found it better to change at every 20k, 30k? Some folks have commented that if the oil gets a little old that you would not be able to shift well. As far as pulling it myself I wouldnt have the time. I work way to many hours and would most likley break something. My old fingers and back just can not climb under trucks anymore.

Thanks

It may be well worth trying fresh oil to improve the shifting before you go any further. Just be aware that the NV5600 requires a specific lubricant that comes from Dodge only.

q56 tranny question

When you change the transmission oil, add a small can of Slick 50 Transmission conditioner. It's amazing how much smoother that stuff makes manual transmissions function. I ran it in a manual transmission for over 200K with zero trans problems.

I just looked up the info on the last oil change and they did not use the right oil for my tranny. Thanks for the input and will be going to a new shop and getting it changed tomorrow. It sounds like at the last change they put in just gear oil. The mechanic I have scheduled with said its a special blend and its $20 a quart. WOW..
I will let folks know if it helps..

Nice find! I'll keep my fingers crossed that the oil change does the job. As I recall, the proper part number for the Dodge stuff is 4874464.

Just drove my truck for work with the new oil in and it shifts almost like new. Had them service the front and rear end as well and the whole truck is much quieter then before... shows that you need to take your trucks to someone you trust..

Thanks for all the input from everyone
