G56 Fluid Change
G56 Fluid Change
Okay, just wanted to make sure I had this figured out before hand.
I need:
14mm hex key
6 qts of fluid: The two names I'm hearing are Amsoil ATF and Redline C+ ATF
Steps:
1. Warm up truck and tranny
2. Park it on a level surface
3. Remove the fill plug, passanger side about half way up.
4. Remove the drain plug, drain old fluid
5. Clean threads, teflon tape on threads, insert plug.
6. Fill with 6 qts of fluid.
Then I should be good to go.
A couple questions:
1. I've got a small leak now from the drain plug. I'm hoping teflon on the plug threads will fix that.
2. What is the torque specs for the plug?
3. Anything I'm forgetting?
-Josh

IIRC, my plugs had copper washers. I would forgo any teflon tape or pipe sealant and try and replace the washer. But that is just me.
I would run the Amsoil- I have run both those fluids you have mentioned and the Amsoil one was better for performance. Cleaner shifts and smoother. Just my observations. But now that Redline C+Atf is in my trany it is going to stay there for quite some time. I want to see how it does in the winter- when I looked at the sheets I found that the pour point of the Redline was a fair amount lower. It gets cold where I live so I am curious to see if that makes a difference
Good luck!

Calypso, did you look up from the leak to see if your tranny is wet higher up? I noticed that mine was leaking too but it is wet all the way up to the top. Dealer guy said it was probably the shifter seal. Some time here soon I'm gonna tear out the interior pieces covering the shifter and check it out.
My G-56 came from the factory with a blue line to line up the plug so you know how tight it is supposed to be... I have never had a leak, mine did not come with a washer. I run the amsoil and I really like it!
I'm pretty sure it's coming from the plug as I can see a red drip looking like it's ready to fall off. But I need to get under there with a rag and get everthing cleaned up to get a really good idea.
Interesting I can't say as I see a washer on mine but it's possible they switched things around for the different years. I'll need to look closer.

No, warranty cannot be voided if the fluid meets the spec. Foe example, you can use any 15/40 motor oil that is CI-4 rated. Does not matter if it is MOPAR or any other brand. I do my OWN maintanence on the entire truck. When I make a purchase I keep my receipts in a binder and keep a service log that shows mileage, what was performed and date.
The law states that if any automaker requires a certain fluid, they have to provide that fluid for Free. I would say your wife is entitled to Free trans services.

yeah i used red line products in my 2003 dodge diesel i had, seemed to work well. i see lots complain of amsoil in the manual trannys so not sure about that, but i know i had a mach 1 mustang and i changed the manual tranny fluid and used royal purple and it shifted like a new tranny
i know red line, amsoil and royal purple are great products, just dont wanna put something in and void the warranty, but dont like padding mopars pockets and buying thier dino crap

I changed the fluid in mine at about 12k miles. I was hoping the Amsoil would make it shift smoother. I had read alot of guys claiming that the Amsoil would help.
As far as I can tell, the Amsoil did absolutely nothing for shift quality.
On the next change I'm going back to a run of the mill ATF+4 and save about $50 over the Amsoil.
