Thank you very much for cross-posting that message. I hadn't thought of torsional spikes during shutdown. I figured it had to do with the reverse rotation at shutdown. Excellent advice.

When you're playing with something that has the power of these Cummins diesels, all sorts of special considerations come into play.

I know this is an older thread but does anyone know how you disassemble a dualmass flywheel? I can see the crank blots behind the outside piece of the flywheel but there is noway to get to them untill it is removed. I have a 2006 with a 6 speed trans and a 325hp HO cummings. This thing is really driving me nuts. Thanks for any help.

When I bought my truck the salesman went out of his way to tell me more than once that when I shut down/turned the truck off to make sure I had the clutch in. I took the time to go and speak with the service manager asking him if there were any little things I should know about and he also told me to make sure I had the clutch in at shutdown. I asked him why that was so important and he talked about the torsion spikes and reverse rotation in his explination. Since it was my first diesel, I wanted to know as much as they could tell me, I asked a ton of questions. I am glad I asked all the questions I did because the little pieces of information they gave me were to my benefit.

This is the first I've heard of this, but I can see where it makes sense. My truck shakes around something awful at shutdown, nothing like my old auto.

If you haul 25 to 30k around daily on a truck with one of these flywheels then your going to replace it sooner than later. The point is my flywheel is dead and the only way to get to the crank bolts is to remove the back piece of the dual mass flywheel. The problem is I've never taken one off and I don’t know how this thing comes apart so if any of you have and knows how to disassemble this thing please let me in on the secrete.

Talking Dual Mass Flywheels [yuk]

Ok I finally was able to talk with Peter at South Bend Clutch and for you that have these dual mass flywheels here's how you disassemble them. It's so simple I'm kind of embarrassed to say but I will anyway Cummings sends all the new HO engines out with a flex plate (so they say anyway) and Chrysler won’t spend the cash to put a real flywheel on so they came up with a add-on to work as one on this thing. It unbolts like a torque converter. DoH!

Mark
P. S. If you have this flywheel call Peter he has a good flywheel conversion kit that uses standard clutch kits off the 2004 trucks. Oh and thanks Peter for your help on the phone.

Dual Mass flywheel

OK later tonight i will be posting links to the picture's of the dual mass flywheel. God what a nightmare this thing is. Might work just fine on day to day driving without a heavy load but you sure wont want to keep a load on this type flywheel like we do on 48' flatbed trailers as it is going to die on you. Whoever the brain was that came up with this design should be burned at the stake !!

What is the problem?

What caused it?

What kind of power mods?

Maybe we are the exception, but we've had three of em, and pull three car trailers, no problems. Although, our trucks are all stock, and not driven by employee's, only myself and my father.

I always shut down all of my manual vehicles with the clutch pushed in, I don’t know why, I guess this is just the way I learned to drive stick. Anyway I decided to try it with out pushing the clutch in and didn’t notice any difference. Same shutdown shakes as usual. I’ll keep the clutch in to be on the safe side however.

You have to love having a new passenger in your truck when they feel it shut down for the first time. They always look at you like you will have rods laying in the driveway or something.
