g56 6 speed overdrive gear ratio change?

I have an 06 with the 6 speed and understand that the 07's came out with the same tranny but with a taller 6th gear ratio? wondering how tough it would be to swap out 6th gear and the related parts to make my early model g56 have the taller ratio? how may parts would have to be swapped and what would the rpm drop be??

After you pull the tranny & crack the case, the guts have to be removed so you can swap 6th gear on the mainshaft and replace the entire countershaft (only available as an assembly)... no job for the DIY'er, but the real problem is the $500 gear & $1500 countershaft.

Might as well buy a used tranny for donor parts - but then you'd be better off dropping the coin for a reman ready to install.

Supersonic,

I see you're looking for a higher gear ratio... On a somewhat related subject, did you used to have a Mitchell gear splitter/OD unit?

For the money it sounds like you might be better off buying a whole new G56 with the higher ratios.

... 285's doesn't make much of a difference, I'm gonna try 315's.

315's will get you about a 10% difference.

I have a dually so taller tires aren't really an option. so $2000 in parts?? that's friken rediculous! wonder what a reman would run? or even a new g56?

the only option i have found that is afordable is a gear swap to 3:42 its about half that if you are a 2x4. i am a 4x4 so its not worth it right now

I just went to a 285-75-17 Toyo which gave me much more humane rpm's on the freeway without killing the fuel economy. Nitto's got a Dura Grappler street tread out in the same size. They're about 34" tall and not too wide at all. I wanted to go with a bigger tire all along,so the earlier version worked out well. With the taller sidewalls, stick with an E rating.

Reman is close to $4K from Dodge... my parts guy said there weren't any "new" (like you can't get a new CTD head - just reman)... maybe someone who works for Dodge can chime in?

That is why I went with the 22.5's Couldn't stand the gearing. OD units were to much maintance plus overpriced.

The 22.5's have already payed for themselves by the expanded tire life. Plus they look like I will get another 100K out of them.

yea, the 22.5's look cool and last a very long time but from everyone who has them Ive heard they kill mileage. the gear vendor can not be used in 6th gear while towing with a stick so its worthless to me. there isn't really a taller tire that can be mounted on a dually without wheel spacers and towing 17k, I just don't trust those spacers. us gear doesnt make an overdrive for the g56, only for the earlier nv5600 or getrag. now I find out the overdrive gear swap is more than the 3:42 gear ratio change for both diffs. seems like I priced the 3:42 swap locally and can get it done for somewhere between $12-1500 parts and labor and this was total cost including both diffs. this sounds like the way to go. and yes I did have a mitchell gear splitter in my 06 but sold it when I was going to trade the truck in on an automatic so that my wife could help with the driving. (never happened)

Could you PM me or call at 865-567-3508? I think I have the Mitchell you used to have, and I could really use some advice if you have a few minutes...

Thanks! Eric
