It was explained by a DC CTD that the fumes would be less after break in since the system is vented directly to the atmosphere and the intake vents are in the rear of the cab.

I like the fumes early in the morning as it reminds me that I'm driving a real truck.

I only seem to have the "Fumes Smell" when the engine is below normal operating temperature.
For example when I start it cold at the first couple of stops I can smell the "fumes" not a diesel exhaust smell but more of a mix of oil / diesel smell.
Me too. And it's a very short duration smell. Ten seconds at the absolute most.

My "fumes" smell somewhat like acetone or some other solvent. It occurs only when I am stopped. A previous poster suggested it was from the crankcase vent, and that does make sense to me. It is mildly annoying, but no real problem. My dealer said there was a TSB on the subject and the solution was a fuel additive that gave the odor more of a perfume smell.
I don't need to have my truck smell like perfume and rejected the "solution."

I only had fumes when I used Rotella T 15w/40. No Rosmella, no fumes so I voted "no fumes" since I switched oils.

I have an '05 quad, 4by shorty and definitely get the stinks at stoplights. I attended a deisel seminar at Dodge for new owners and they had an explanation- personally I think if they know of the problem they should eliminate it.
The explanation was several fold. Firstly the new oil required for the new engine has many additives that are really stinky- there solution is to sell you deisel deodorant ( smells like lemon)- my feeling is you are just masking a toxic fume you shouldn't be breathing in the first place.
Secondly apparently the air intake for the heater is in an area subject to the stink so at a standstill you have to switch to recirculate on your heater control.
I haven't noticed it lately but am in the habit of switching to recirculatte upon comng to a stoplight now. Also I think after a fresh oil change it seems to worse.

i don't smell my stink--i smell eveybody else.
this may be off target but, with a closed cab i pick up more outside air odors than other vehicles i have owned. examples would be burning leaves, garbage trucks, brake and clutch burning etc.
just an observation.

Ditto!

no smell inside when moving.
I'v never heard of anyone smelling the blow-by odor while moving. Do you notice the odor while stopped, engine running?

Mine smelled for the first couple thousand miles. I think there was some cosmoline or something burning off- kind of a burned chemical smell.

Since then, if I'm in stop and go, sometimes I get a bit of exhaust smell unless I switch to recirculate.

I've also noticed a fuel smell sometimes, after I've recently drained a little from the seperator. I think what is left coating the inside of the hose causes it until it drys completely.

Mine really isn't bad, so I guess I'll vote for the double negative.

I use Rotella T and no fumes in cab. But, I do hear a tic/knock in the cab and it does not smell right but DC says NORMAL.

On my 01 I did get a sniff now and then.

I have seen a few ways to fix the problem on different sites.
1. extend breather hose closer to rear of truck.
2. Many trucks have been delivered missing some one way flapper valves located under the cowl.
part #55276332AB $1.50 each!

3. Some trucks are also missing a large oval plug next to and above the flapper. No part number
( try tape )

Breather hose was extended, froze and blew seals in motor.

Last week I added another liter of oil...one every 400 kilometers now...or every 250 miles but then this week when I was topping up the washer fluid I checked the oil again... its 3" over full and the tailpipe is soaked.
Ever since I got this truck it has stunk bad. I would get a whiff of very strong raw diesel now and then but never had a rough idle or hard start...except one time when the water in fuel light came on...but it cleared after I drained the filter cansister.
I am dumping the oil and catching a sample tomorrow.

I have done all the cowl fixes and now after I called the dealer about the new findings in the crankcase, its going there next week. Might be getting it torn down and/or new injectors.

I think theres been an internal fuel leak on and off for some time now...which would account for the HARSHER then normal fumes in the cab. Afterall, I have owned 25 of these trucks since 90 and this one is the ONLY one thats been harsh. Many of those trucks had in excess of 250,000 miles and one had 400K!
