Fuels for Cummins Engines

I know that this topic has been discussed before, but I found some information straight from Cummins. In the Cummins Service Bulletin 3379001-09 Dated February 6, 2005, it gives specifications as to the properties a fuel must contain in order to be used in ANY Cummins engine. This includes things like viscosity, Sulfur content, cloud point, pour point, ash, distillation etc. They go on to talk about not just number 1 and 2 diesel fuels, but things like jet fuel and kerosene. This bulletin applies to ALL Cummins diesel engines and according to it if you can get Kerosene or Jet Fuel which specifications meet or exceed the ones posted by Cummins, you can use that fuel in you Cummins. This is a rather lengthy bulletin, but it also talks about mixing used oil in with the fuel. Cummins allows that on engine not equipped with a catalytic converter. Here is a quote on used oil mixing right from the bulletin: "Used engine lubricating oil can be blended with fuel using the Cummins Lube Oil Blender, Part Number 3376317 (110 volt, 60 Hz) or Part Number 3376362 (220 volt, 50 Hz). his process can be used to supplement fuel supply as well as provide a means of disposing of used lubricating oil." Anyways, it is my understanding that you can't just get this thing on the net. I went straight to Cummins to get and they printed it out for me. If you want any specifics just email me and I will try to get you the answer.

Yeah, the system is used on big rigs to never have to change the oil. You just add oil to the reservoir when it gets below the line and the system puts a little bit of oil into the engine whenever conditions are right.

You dont need to buy anything except a old coffee pot. You need the coffee pot to filter the used oil through. I use a double layer of blue paper shop towels for filter in top of a 30 cup coffee percolator. filter used oil through this , draw off filtered oil out of spicket into gal milk jugs. dump into fuel tank. Cummins says you can add 5% oil to diesel. So for every 20 gal diesel you can add 1 gal used oil. My 98.5 has 35 gal tank, I run a gal oil to tank of diesel ,thats less than 5%. Just make sure you add at least 20 gal diesel before you dump in a gal oil. I dont give it a steady diet, I just use my own oil changes.
My recomendation is to do this when your working the truck like towing . Motor is hot ,combustion chamber is hot and will burn oil better then. I dont do this for short drives or cold weather when motor takes long time to warm up.
Result. Cant see a bit of difference in performance of truck .I tow 12,000 lb TT. No smoke, no more or less power , starts and runs and idles the same. Cant tell its in there at all. If you hand calculate your mileage you gain because you buy 20 gal diesel but you burn 21 gal ,so you get farther down the road. Works for me. Lotta guys will tell you your nuts but if cummins says its OK thats what I'v done.

Now see I knew I would be glad I saved all that old peanut oil from frying
turkeys ! I've got about a hundred gallons of that stuff sitting around
from Thanksgiving and Christmas from the past ten years !
That should offset the high price of cheap diesel

Very interesting idea. Even better than pouring the used oil in the neighbors pool.

I was just thinking, would this oil plug the fuel filter in any way ? I am assuming not since you are pre filtering it and the mix is diluted so. Nevermind, I just answered my own question. DUH

I run my fuel filters untill the truck misses and farts around at higher rpm. Then I just slow down run the rest of day and change fuel filter that evening. I got 32,000 first filter ,33 second, 29-30000 third, and now have 103,000 on truck. Used oil dont seem to affect filter much.
