Fuel Pump Leak

Well it looks like I have the CP3 pump leak. This is the first problem I have experienced in
17000 miles. I saw the posts where sawboywv1 and 030303 and others were discussing this issue. 030303 mentioned a seal where the pump meets the mounting plate. Is this a o-ring or gasket seal? I REALLY don't want to have someone at the dealer dinkering in my fuel system.
Especially after hearing what Jonesey had to say. If the parts you can see are trashed what about the ones you can't. I have not been back to my dealer since I bought my truck and may opt. to fix this myself especially if it's just a mating surface sealing issue.
I have no idea what kind of service my dealer could provide. Any sugestions?
I have been reading here for some time but this is my first post. This is a GREAT site with lots of valuable information, thanks.

03WVJay,
Is your pump leaking all the time and at all temperatures? If it is you need to get it in the shop to be repaired under warranty. I didn't mean to scare you guys with my bad luck. From what I have heard that dang pump runs about $2200-$2300 big ones if you have to purchase it. It's my guess that's why others have stated DC will now only replace it if they can observe a leak in progress. I am in a holding pattern until mine starts to leak other than intermitently, mainly when it is extremely cold outside. If you do take it in, insist that the tech uses covers on the fenders, the bumper and a piece of cardboard to cover the condensor. A little bit of prevention goes a long way. Do any of you DC employees know exactly which warranty the CP3 pump is covered under? What ever happened to Luke? He used to be such a great help.

Well never mind. I tried to draw a picture but it didn't work out. The "mounting plate" (sorry, I couldn't think of a better name) is part of the whole cp3 assembly and is attached to the pump part itself. The "mounting plate" then bolts to the engine. Mine was leaking between the pump part itself and the "mounting plate". Don't know what kind of gasket is there,or even if there is one, or why it is leaking in the first place. My leak appeared to be coming from a blackbolt which attached the "mounting plate" to the engine. The tech said he thought it was where the two pieces joined. Wasn't a bad repair. Dealer took about 2 hours and it seemed straight forward. In fact, I was so pleased with my tech I brought him back a case of beer!

I've diaged a couple of these leaks by putting engine oil dye in the fuel filter canister. Shows up nice and bright yellow with the UV light.

One degree F and one quarter size drip on the driveway while warming up this morning. Anyone care to venture a guess?

Yeh Jonesey, I'll take a guess. It's the pump. I checked all the banjo fittings etc.
on mine and they all seem fine, no leak. Mine seems to be leaking at the bottom of the pump where the pump meets the engine mouting bracket. I also noticed there is another sensor under the pump. One is out where you can see it, the other is under the pump near the block. Can someone tell me what the two sensors do?? I assume one is a pressure sensor??
I had the leak for the past two week when it was fairley warm here above 50°F.
I have not checked this week since it got cold 0°F here this morning.
I am also woried about fuel leaking into the crankcase. If its leaking to the outside I have to say it could just as easily be leaking to the inside. I have been monitoring the oil for level rise or fuel smell, none noticed yet.

I am wondering if it could be some type of a relief valve opening when it is in the high idle mode? The drip couLd just be migrating to the bottom of the pump. It is quite difficult to see the entire pump area even from below the truck. The temp here this morning 25 degrees and no drip on the driveway.

Jonesey, I know what you are saying about hard to see. I have tried every way I can to see better but there is just to much stuff in the way. I looks like if you unmount the ECM/ECU?? on the side of the engine it may open up a sight path from below. I can see that the sensor/actuator, the one that is hard to see near the block, is somewhat oily too so it could be that thing leaking and migrating down to the bottom of the pump. I have been driving the gaser this week since its so cold. I think I'll start another thread and ask what the two devices are on the pump that have wires going to them.
It seem odd the it will leak only when it's cold. I think that is telling us something??? Mine seems worse when cold. I just can't believe that two mating machined surfaces... with gasket?? could leak due to cold temps. But antifreeze sort of behaves that way on occasion could diesel fuel be the same?
I also thought it may be due to blended fuel. Is kerosene and diesel more likely to leak than just diesel???

Way to the north..... on RT 50, 20 miles south of Cumberland Md, 10 miles east of Keyser WV.
Mineral County. As for this pump thing. Mine is still wet. The dealer said don't worry for now. 100k warranty anyway. He is telling me if they clean it and run it and it doesn't leak they really don't want to replace it. As long as doesn't get any worse I can live with it.

just had my cp3 replaced under warrenty (28000 miles). dealer stated star had to authorize the repair. dealer fixed with no problems. when i noticed mine leaking it looked like it was dripping from the crank sensor. fuel was running to the lowest piont and then dropping off. I don not know how long that it has been leaking but my fuel mileage previously in the city was 13, after repair fuel mileage creeped up to 15 the temp around here has been fluctuating between 18 45 degrees here in the south.
