Fuel Problem

Over the weekend our 03 2500 with 67k shut off at a half tank, being a Mercedes Mechanic, I suspected the lift pump. So, we had it towed to a local dealer, as we were an vacation, and their diagnosis was a clogged sending unit. Charged us $400 bucks for the new one installed and away we went. Last night drove back home 200 miles, after filling it up and as it got to the half tank again, it shut off. This dealer is 4 hours away and now he says it is probaly the lift pump and because it is warranty, they do not replace them unless they know for sure they are defective.

1) Any one heard of the sending unit being replaced before a lift pump?
2) If the lift pump is bad, anyone have a dealer who did not want to replace it because it is a warranty job?

TIA
Dan

lift pump going out is not uncommon, so i don't know why they'd hassle you about doing it under warranty once it's been verified as being the problem. many dealerships just have to verify that it is actually the cause of your problem by going through the appropriate flow chart before they replace it.
