I assume that the D2 wasnt around when this test was conducted, or it isnt one of the "big ones". I will call AFE Tech Support tomorrow and talk to them, if it doesnt have the water seperator it will go back, or on the shelf. I agree that $23 isnt a great deal, but if the thing seperates water and filters to 3 Micron absolute I think it would be worth it. (plus its better than buying from AFE at $22 + $10 for shipping.)

Back to my other question, does anyone know if the manufacturers of these filters have a standard by which they test, and if so where are the guidelines?

On a side note, when I returned the Napa Gold XE filter the counter jockey told me that there wasnt a standard when testing fuel filters, so his 7 nominal could be better than others 5 or 3 absolute...anyone know if there is truth to this or is there a standard?
The AFE filter is 3um nominal and somthing like 7um absolute.. and from what I have read it is NOT a f/w sep.. so if its your only filter DO NOT RUN IT.

Wix is 8um absolute, 7um nominal... OE spec is 7um absolute. DO NOT USE WIX.

There is a standard, J1985 is the one that dodge wants 7um absolute. There are only 3 filters that meet it.

OEM/Dodge/Cummins/Fleetguard
Donaldson P550800
Baldwin PF7977

Of those 3 the Baldwin is the only one that exceeds the OE spec.

IIRC below is the spec Dodge/Cummins uses for fuel filters:

CATEGORY FUEL FILTER SPECIFICATION

(Single Pass) 7 micron @ 98.7% Efficiency

Dirt Holding Capacity at 1.5 PSI and 52
GPH (Bosch CRFS TKU) Greater than or equal to 15 grams

Maximum Delta Pressure @ Rated Flow
(Installed in Housing) 1.5 PSI (New) or
5 IPSI (Plugged or Cold Weather)

Water Stripping Performance Per SAE J1488 = SAE 95% Efficient @ 36.5 GPH

Fluid Compatibility Commercial Diesel US#l and US#2
(LSD/ULSD) B20 Material Compatible with
SBME (Soybean Methyl Ester) and RSME
(Rapeseed Methyl Ester)

I believe that Hastings also makes a fuel filter that is 5 micron absolute like the Baldwin. I e-mailed the company and that's what they said anyway.

Can someone tell me where on the baldwin site that it sez the PF7977 is 5 micron? I picked one up today from local dealer and no where on the box or invoice does it say 5 micron. It sez 7 micron. Even the website says 7 micron.

Am I missing something?

Where do you see 7 micron? The 5 micron comes directly from Baldwin.

*AFE 3 Micron Fuel Filter update*

After advice from 64 Wednesday I called AFE and talked to Steve, I asked him about the filtering capabilities and if the D2 was a water seperator, first he told me NO so I asked him how they could claim that "all new vehicle warranties remain in effect when AFE Pro Guard D2 Fuel Filters are used" when Dodge calls for a filter with water sep capabilities...he then said, well I will need to do some research and get back to you...

So Friday I emailed the Ebay seller that sold me the filter and asked the same question and told them I would like a refund...guess maybe tomorrow we will find out about my $23. Like the helicopter man said, this filter is JUNK without a water seperator and I feel AFE might be guilty of a little deceptive advertising. Now my hunt for a Baldwin distributer begins!!!

Yep, I emailed AFE with regards to the water filtering abilities of the D2 filter and they (whoever emailed me back at that time) mentioned it was NOT a water separator...which means its JUNK to me.
Maybe they have changed, as that was close on a year ago...

Dont think it has...unfortunately when I ordered mine I read several statements like "exceeds OEM requirements" and such. It's kind of irrelevant to me if I get my $23 back from the Ebay vendor, but I dont like the fact that AFE makes their claim and puts it on the box...

I guess we will see...seems like I need to drop Geno's a line...wonder if they take PayPal, gotta some coin laying in their burning a hole in my pocket.

There's plenty of websites to order the filter from or go to the Baldwin website to find the nearest dealer. Also can find the same filter at autopart stores under the Hastings brand.
