I'm trying to figure out the fuel filter micron measurement means. Is the higher the measurement better ( 7 micron ) or lower better ( 5 micron ) ? I was in Nappa and they recommend the Napa Gold(wix) 3585xe filter. It's a 7mic glass media no metal filter. They also have the 3585 filter but it doesn't have the same micro rating.

 

The lower the better. The OE specs for a fuel filter are 7um absolute (98.7%), with 95% emulsifed/95% free water separation.

There are only 3 filters that meet this spec.

OE (Dodge/Fleetguard/Cummins)
Donaldson P550800
Baldwin PF7977 (Hastings FF1260), actually 5um absolute. Only filter to exceed OE specs.

The WIX (NAPA) filters are 7um nominal and do not meet the OE standards. They are 8um absolute. Wix does not care what OE specs are and have been quoted by several people saying "Its good enough".. A Wix fuel filter will void your fuel system warranty.

 

You should go with the Baldwin PF7977, I switched over from Fleetguard.
So far so good for me

 

I have been using the Baldwin for many miles, I wouldn't use anything else in the stock location.

so are hastings filters just as good as baldwin? one of the local parts houses that i have an account with, KOI (Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana) auto parts, carries hastings filters. i have always used carquest brand which is wix..

 

has anyone used the AFE filter? It says it meets 3-micron
high-efficiency requirements

The D2 is not a fuel/water separator as per AFE. Given that information, this filter is not a viable option as it does not meet O/E specifications.

I currently use the Baldwin PF7977 which is the best you can currently purchase for the OE canister.

 

Hastings filters are baldwin filters.

The AFE D2 is 3um nominal, 7um absolute and is not a f/w sep. So its no better at filtering, and not a f/w sep.. Why they even manufacture this filter is beyond me.

when i had my 03 cummins, i bought a fuel filter from pure power. was a bit expencive but well worth it. its a stainless steel filter that u can wash and filters down to 1 mic. the web site is purepower .com

 

I would be curious how that does at f/w sep. It doesn't appear to be on their site anymore, can you find it?

 

I was unaware that the Fleetguard did not meet the specs....
