Fuel Filter Question? Help

Okay, I think I need to change my fuel filter. It has been awhile. And Ive noticed on my commander monitor that my fuel pressure is dropping from time to time, and not at WOT. Heres the thing, I bought a fleetguard fuel filter from a dodge dealer. Well Ive had it for about a month, and get to looking at it and the part number etc. and it is the 10 micron filter and not the 7 micron. I know that cummins recommends the 7 for the common rail. Would it hurt my truck to run this filter? Will there even really be any difference? PLease help

Oh, by the way, I know along time ago there used to be a real nice HOW TO post on changing the fuel filter, and I cant find it anywhere. Any help would be great, thanks guys.

The fleetguard 7 micron is the one you need. There is also a 5 micron Baldwin you can get for the stock canister. Bosch ( Who makes your injectors) actually recommends 3 MICRONS! I run the 5 micron Baldwin in the stock canister and a 2 micron kit from Glacier Diesel.

use the 7 micron fleetguard or 5 micron baldwin. if the dealer is not out of your way, see if he'll swap out your filter for one of the new 7 micron ones.

The 10u filter probably won't hurt anything.

How to:
Wipe / blow dirt from around filter assy
Drain fuel canister, using the water drain
Using a large socket (1" or 1-1/16" IIRC), Remove the filter lid/filter assy.
Unsnap filter from lid
Remove old o-ring
Using some diesel or fuel treatment, lube new o-ring and install on filter lid
Snap new filter to lid
Install new filter/lid assy
Cycle key-on, key-off 2-3x to prime the fuel filter.
Start truck

Wasn't there a TSB on the 10u filter? If so, I would think the dealer can only sell the 7u filter for the designated years of the TSB. But I have been wrong before.

Go to www.genosgarage.com and buy them online. Get all your filters from them you will ever need. They do not carry the baldwin however.

The Wix 33585XE is nominal at 7 microns. Wix 33585 is nominal at 10 microns. Like the others have said use either the Baldwin PF7977 or a Fleetguard FS19856 Stratapore filter and not the Mopar 10 micron filter. BTW nominal is only a 50% efficiency rating where Absolute is 98.7% efficiency. The Baldwin filter is Absolute at 5 microns and the Fleetguard is Absolute at 7 microns.

So does the Baldwin 5 micron filter put added stress on the stock LP? I would like the filtration (would really like a 2 micron filter), but don't want to prematurely wear out the CP3.

i don't understand, you took the 10 micron fleetguard back to the dealer, then bought a 10 micron wix??? (both filters don't meet minimum OEM specs). if you were going to use a 10 micron filter (which you shouldn't be), you should have at least stuck with the fleetguard, as it does a good job of keeping water from getting through- do you know if the wix is a water separator, as well as a fuel filter?

FYI, the Baldwin filter is nominal at 2 microns and absolute at 5 microns.

chipmonk,

I have yet to get any answer when I ask if the a Wix filter is also good at stripping water out of diesel.
