Fuel Filter Question

A Diesel Newbie here has a question. How hard is it to change out the fuel filter on an 2006 2500 4X4? Is there anything I should be concerned about if I do it myself or does anybody have "tricks" for making it easier. Looks to be fairly simple, but just want to make sure before I go trying to replace it myself.

Thanks,
AZHogWild

Just don't overtighten it and break the plastic can or top.

I use a 1 1/8 in. socket, 1/2 in drive, 2 5 in. extentions and a 1/2 in swivel between the socket and the first 1/2 in. extention. Frist, before you losen the cap, make sure you drain the fuel from the filter housing into a container, I use a 16 oz. dryed out water bottle. Before I re-install the new filter, I fill the housing about half way with the fuel I drained out so the fuel pump don't have to pump as much fuel to the housing to start the engine. Have fun and good luck !

I took some nail polish and marked the location of the cap. You can just retighten the cap to the two index marks (one on the cap, the other on the filter housing)

Glad to see someone else using the bottle method to prime the filter housing. Question to any experts, if the housing is not filled prior to tightening the filter cap, where does the air go when the pump fills it up? Pardon my ignorance but, the only stupid question is the one that was never asked. Be gentle!

the fuel you are draining and putting back in is dirty fuel with water in it, that is why it is called a fuel/water separator, either use new fuel or dont worry about it. just turn the key on for about 15 seconds, 2 or 3 times and start as normal. the electric pump on your rig wont care.

make sure the o ring is replaced on the cap.
