Fuel Filter change, How often?

I am new to diesel maintainence and would like to know which filter to use in the stock set up and how often to change it out. Thanks for the knowledge!

Don't know the fleetguard part# offhand but you need to make sure it's the 7micron filter and not the 10 mic one. I change mine every 5k with the oil. It's a cheap filter and easier to remember the intervals that way. I think the recommended interval is every 10K or 15K but I can tell a difference in throttle response and power doing it every 5k, guess my fuel stop must have some dirty fuel I dunno..

I belive the manual has you change it every 15,000 miles (about once a year). Some change it everytime they change the oil- 7,500 miles (about twice a year). Cheap insurance.

Anyone having injector problems with the 7 micron fuel filter? Are there 2 micron filters available for the stock canister?

You can run either the Baldwin # PF 7977 which is a 5 micron or the fleetguard which is a 7 micron. I also have the GDP 2 micron secondary fuel filter after losing an Injector with the 5 micron alone. Bosch recommends 3 microns. Having said that, I change mine with the oil as well, 5,000 miles. But I travel a LOT and get fuel from a lot of different places.

I changed every 15,000 miles with the 10 micron filters. I now change every 10,000 miles with the 7 micron filters.

just wondering where you got the info about bosch recommending 3 micron filtration? according to cummins, bosch has not revised their recommendation for filtration, since it went from 10 microns to 7.

I change mine every 10,000 miles, or every 10 weeks. whichever comes first. It's always been the miles though.

You are correct, the manual says every 15k.

nope- mopar uses fleetguard filters, which are now down to 7 microns. only baldwin makes a 5 micron, drop-in filter.

More then a year ago I called Bosch about what micron rating for the common rail.hey would NOT tell me.Said it was private info! I then called some more Bosch phone numbers and they had no clue or that it was suppose to be NOT given out.So one of these phone numbers I called gave me a phone number to Bosch R&D. Told R&D I was outfitting a off shore boat with new diesels that were going to be using common rail injection. That guy said ALL Bosche common rail injection since its DEPUT required a 5 micron or less.I said Dodge and Duramax trucks don't.He said OH we told THEM that over and over and THEY paid no heed way back when.Plus theres been a injector design change or so I've read in the last year.

Somewhere I remember a white paper with Bosch's recommendation of using 5 micron filtration as a minimum for their CR designs. But for the life of me can't find that info anymore. Was like five years ago or so.

the dirtier the fuel filter get's the better it filters add a fuel gauge and change the filter when the pressure under load drops a couple of pounds from normal and use the baldwin 7977 depending on where you get your fuel you can get about 75,000 miles per filter
