Fuel Filter CHange

I know this is a pretty easy project, but I have never done it on my truck, so bear with me please. I was wondering what the steps are you guys use to change it, if any or do you just pull the lid off and swap filters. Any special tools needed for the job? Like I said, I am mechanically inclined, but just want to make sure Im doing it right, so please help me out. Thanks in advance for your help.

just remove the lid
pull out the old filter
put in the new one
put on the lid
then cycle the key a few times before you restart it.

1-1/8" wrench or socket is needed

replace the o-ring with the new one coming with the filter

don't over tighten the cap, could crack it

also a good idea to drain the housing before proceding with the change out [dump it into a clean container and you can pour it back in the tank]

absolute cleanleines is recomended if you clean out any sediment from the canister bottom. that stand pipe in the middle is the clean side. make sure nothing falls in there

Fuel Filter

Like Nick says except I can usually look down in the can with a flashlight and see if there is any moisture. If not I don't drain the can. Why make the mess.

Easy stuff. You know where to find me. You can ask me or bring it by and do it at my house. Just don't pay anyone to do it. I do "all" my own maintenance.
pm me if ya want.

I usually use a vacuum tool to suck out all the crud from the bottom of the bowl.

1-1/8"socket with a 12" extension and a swivel attachment. Makes it much much much easier!.... I do a few a day...

Just to add to this...........the filter should come off/out with the housing lid. Then remove it from the lid, install the new filter onto the lid.....and replace. Then turn on the key (without cranking) and let the lift pump refill the housing with fuel. You should be able to hear it. Once it is full, turn it off and do it again. Then it should start right up.

As an added note, the cap says max torq 25 ft lbs. I torqued it once to about 15 and thought I would never get it off next time. Now I just tighten it as hand tight as I can. There really is not a lot of pressure in there.

Like other said, use the new "O" ring and be sure to oil it first.

Also, a six sided socket is better than a 12 sided.

I did mine 3 weeks ago, all these posts give good tips. I didnt re tighten the cap with the wrench, just hand tighten it down, no sence in breaking it, god only knows what a dealer would charge for a replacement. Mine took 3 bumps of the key to finally start up, I was SCARED. Then it idled rough for a few seconds. Just let it run for a few minutes after it does start to flush out any air, and to make sure you've got prime. My old filter had 15k on it, was pretty black. New one hasn't seemed to help MPG's though

I just replaced mine using a crescent wrench which rotates nicely under the master cylinder. My cap was difficult to remove until is was almost all the way off and then was difficult to tighten. Felt like the threads were stripped but they looked fine and there is no way it could have been done by hand. I lubed the new O-ring with diesel.

It's between the master cylinder and the engine and lower than the master cylinder. It has a black cap that's about 4 inches in diameter with a hex nut on top that's 1 1/8".
