Fuel in Crankcase
Fuel in Crankcase
Tell me what you think happened. The crankcase on my 04.5 CDT has diesel fuel in it. I had it towed to the dealer and they are waiting to here from Cummins service. When I first took it in they though the seal on the engine fuel pump had gone out allowing fuel to pass into the engine. That did not fix it, they have ruled out stuck injectors and they are thinking that the head may be cracked. I would just like to know what you guys think in might be.
I was towing up I-80 (7,000 pounds max) in California when the CEL came on, I looked in the mirror and saw smoke coming out the back. I look in the other mirror and it was not coming out the exhaust pipe. I pulled over on the Interstate, looked underneath, and saw smoke and fluid dripping out the breather. Shut it down and pulled the dipstick and it registered about 4-5 inches over the full mark. Water temperature-normal, oil pressure-normal, never took it over 1,300 on the EGT gauge. Tell me what you think.

bad copper washer at head to injector seal, bad o-rings sealing top end of injector. and it could still be a partially stuck injector.. if the control cartridge hangs up, it will allow the injector to keep flowing fuel into the cylinder
you can't go by the gauge in the dash.. anything over 6psi and it will read all ok...

I agree it's gotta be an injector issue of some sort.
Everytime I had a crankcase full of diesel fuel on the 04.5 the final diagnosis was always a stuck or damaged injector...not saying that the other things can't happen i'm just indicating what happened to mine.
Just happened to me 2 weeks ago, #4 injector. Pull the valve cover and start engine. Look for vapor coming out on one of the cylinders, thats tha bad one. If no vapor, then have dealer dye fuel and use their blacklight with cover off and look for the dye using the blacklight. My guess also, injector.......

How long would it take to do in an engine with a few(4-5)qt.s of diesel fuel in it. The reason I ask is my uncle put a gal. in our old 6 cil. ford commander (he was going to change the oil)one morning and left. I bailed hay with it all day before he got back and told me. I went ahead and changed the oil and so far no ill effects.
What they told me was that under the normal test it did not show up. After talking to Dodge/Cummins, they performed another test and blocked of the return fuel line that raised the fuel pressure higher. This caused the leak to show up. It was not leaking into the cylinder but into the top of the cylinder head and draining into the crankcase.
