Should a fuel additive be used with the ULSD in the pre-emissons 5.9 engines. Is there any lubrication issues?

 

I would use it. We use AmsOil additive with every tank on our 02 Duramax and I run either that, Power Service, or 2-stroke oil in my 93 CTD. Try finding a LSD or a BioD station and run that if you can. I know its getting harder to find LSD but for me its worth searching for.

 

You will probably get LOTS of opinions on this as well as many many different additives to choose from. Yes, your fuel in my opinion DOES need an additive for lubrication. I personally use a Mixture of Power service ( Grey bottle) and Lucus. I can really tell the difference when my truck has the lucus and when it doesn't. Either way it won't hurt to use it.. Especially with the sensitivity of the injectors and fuel system...Happy reading your responses!

 

What could it hurt by not using an additive? I know the injectors run a little quieter and people say the engine runs smoother but if Dodge doesn't say I need it to maintain the warranty then what can it hurt?

 

Remember that Dodge is hoping you make it past your warranty period when you have problems. IF you never added a drop of additive you probably wouldn't see much difference until later down the road.. By the time your Injectors, CP3, fuel pumps, etc are toast, then you are out of luck and have to foot the bill. A very expensive Bill. I need this truck to last much longer than ever before so I don't have to buy a low emissions one so I am doing all I can!

 

Regulations require the ultralow sulfur diesel fuel to have a lubricity additive added at the refinery level because of the lack of sulfur. You may not need the additive for lubricity but the c-tane improvement, detergent and water protection go a long way toward engine and injector life and tests show the improved spary pattern from the detergent additive produces enough mileage gain to pay for itself. The improved c-tane should aid engine starting.

 

I put a little in when I think about it. I don't put it in full strength, the brand I use says 1 oz. for every 12 gallons, I only put about 2 oz. in a full tank. More important than fuel additives is buying fuel from a reputable station and changing your fuel filter.

 

Yes I agree on the fuel filter. I change mine at every oil change ( 5,000) or if I see a sudden loss in fuel economy. I travel quite a bit rodeoing and always stop in reputable places but you never know.. you could be getting the bottom of the barrel before the tanker refills..

 

The lube in additives "may" help prolong the life of some parts depending on who you talk to. I personally run additive with ulsd. I believe I can hear & see the differance. But your fuel system will become extremely dirty if you do not run a cleaner occasionally. My buddy said the dealer performed an injector cleaning for him. They dont see it necessary to run an additive but they do see it necesary to sell you this cleaning? I say find an additive with lube & cleaning properties & run it with ulsd or lsd. JMO
BTW, it has been said that some additives have some harsh chemicals in them. As long as you are using the recomended dose & not over treating I believe you will be OK.

 

All I know when I use 8oz of Stanadyne and 8oz MMO my truck runs smoother, gets better gas mileage, starts better in cold weather and idles smoother. I use it.

 

I use some commercial grade stuff the military uses...i put in like 2 oz in each tankful
