Front End Wandering !!!

Has anyone else had this problem on there truck ?? My truck is starting to wander all over the place with the front end. I cant imagine the ball joints already going bad on this truck. That is the only conclusion I can come up with. Has anyone heard of these new trucks having ball joint problems ???

My '02 4wd does the same thing, I would also be interested if anybody has found a fix for this.

I have had several people say that they have replaced the tracking bar. The tracing bar is all one piece and if it starts to wear you have to replace the whole thing. We used to by Moog as they had a life time warranty. That has changed this year (probably because they are all wearing so bad) to a 1 year warranty. They cost around $155.00.

Have you tried tighten the steering box? It needs adjusting from time to time.

Guys, I have an '03 and our track bar is suppose to be better than 04 and beyond track bar. I am going to replace my ball joints in a week or so. I have about 128,000 miles on the truck. They aren't toast and I not wandering but I have a toasted u-joint on the front and they are about 75% toast so I am erring on the side of caution. I'm sure I could go to 150,000 miles or more but I like to solve problems before they get bigger. I found spicer bottoms and moog tops. Both were slightly cheaper than stock and are nice looking greasable units. I would look at the steering box first. I understand there is a steering box brace for our trucks that makes the world of difference. Do a search on this and see what pops up. Good luck with your problem. ks

Oops forgot, check the steering stabilizer. A bent shaft on it can cause the truck to be all over the place. I hit the one on the f350 on hard snow and it bent slightly making the truck undriveable. ks

On top of the streering box is a nut (approx 5/8's) with an allen screw in the center. Loosen the nut (while you have an allen wrench in the screw and turn the allen wrench about 45-60 degrees, no more than 90 degrees. Tighten the nut while keeping the allen screw stationary. Test drive by going around a corner and letting go of the steering wheel. It should return to the center (or pretty close) on its own. Do not over tighten allen screw.

This worked for me.

I just took my truck in for a similar problem. It has 5000 miles on it and it suddenly lost all return to center feel. You could go around a corner on the freeway and if you let go of the wheel it would just keep going in that direction.

I took it to my cousin (who is the service manager at a dealer) and they replaced the steering gear. He said its the fifth one he has replaced.

When the took my old box out the sector shaft was screwed all the way in. They figured that was the problem.

He also told me that they have had tons of new trucks come in with frozen ball joints. When they bind up they will wander all over.
