Front end noise

I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 4x4 and I am having a problem with a noise and I can not figure it out.. The noise sounds like I have big mud tires on, it happens when I am going 45mph+ and when I hit bumps that make the front of the truck sag it gets worse.. Also I only have 47k miles on it, I just put a left side wheel bearing on it, and it still has the same sound. Any help would be a big help to me. Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum.

Check the front drive shaft. There should be no play in it, it has a cardon joint that uses 2 ujoints. If there is play in this joint it can cause sevear damage to the transfer case if it completly fails.

Also check the rear drive shaft ujoints and if you have the 2 piece drive shaft it might be the hanger bearing support.

Is the noise coming from the front tires? Swap the rear tires to the front and see-----.

Do you grease the front drive shaft?

If it's never been greased there is a change it is bad. Is there a shop/dealership local to you that could help you find it?

Not all have a grease fitting. Mine does not. I am planning to use a needle and insert it through the seal and grease the u-joints. There is no way to get to the cardon center.

None of the u-joints have a fitting, but every Cardan I have seen does, even the ones where people thought there wasn't one.

The grease fitting for that joint can be a real bear to locate, even when you know where it's at. Just a little dirt hides it. I find that I have to rotate the shaft slowly and really look to see it, and stick the end of a rag between the yokes with a small screwdriver to wipe away any old grease and dirt. Mine is a little sliver looking flush fitting. I use a small needle as the bigger needles don't work well. It's hard but needs to be lubed.

I have had other vehicles with cardon joints and would grease them. My '03 does not have a grease fitting. I have looked at it very carefully.

The fitting on this Cardan joint doesn't have your normal grease fitting, it's the only one I have ever seen use it. It's quite hard to see on a dirty joint.

It is just like the one I had on the 72 Blazer I had. Uses a blunt needle and it was sometimes difficult to get the grease to go into the joint. I looked for that grease point when the truck was new and have looked again later but have not found a grease point on the joint. The only grease fittings or grease points I ever found on the truck is the 2 tie rod ends.

I finally located the grease fitting, I greased it up tonight but didn't have time to take it for a drive to see if the noise changed at all. Thanks for the help
