Steering gear box.
Took my truck to the local Dodge Dr. to have the steering system checked. As in the previous post, it was hard to steer and wouldn't center. They checked it out and found the steering gear box was defective. The good DR. also said the ball joints were OK and the play was in the "teens" (.011-.019). The allowable limits are .060. It was under warrantee and they replaced the steering box with no problems. Works like a new one. Just hope this one lasts longer than 14,500 mi.

At 65k miles, the junk General tires destroyed a tire rod end. I will replace shocks, tires, and have it aligned this month. I will check my ball joints at that time(crossing fingers).

If you cut apart one of the tir rod ends you will see why they don't last long. There can't be more than 5 bucks worth of parts in there. It is pretty bloody sad.
The ball joints will last longer if they are greased and the truck is driven often so condensation or water is not allowed to form.
The front end parts are second rate on all the big three and is a good way for them to make some easy money at the dealer once the warranty is out.
A dodge front end with a ford track bar and tie rod ends from around the 02 year would be a huge improvement.
