just noticed a few days ago. i was thinking of getting a front diff cover with a sight glass so i can keep an eye on the fluid.
Yeah, that's your pinion seal.

Had the dealer do mine earlier this year when it let go.

Can it be let go for a while if i used a heavier oil and kept an eye on the fluid? Also does it only leak out when using 4x4?

Mine wasn't that bad but close. I had some old 75/140 (whatever the 1500 Ram uses). Not enough to fill it but I put that in when I changed the fluid and filled it the rest of the way with the lighter 75/90 syn fluid it calls for and it never leaked again. Kept using 75/140 and no more leak for like 4 years and sold the truck that way.

If the climate you are in is super cold I'd probably fix it but if you are in a warm climate just use the 140. I believe it meets spec, read your manual.
