Front Band Adjusted at 117k ..3 turns bad?

Hi,

My truck lost second gear last week, would just spin in second. It also did not do anything if put manually in second gear. This happened 2500 miles after a fluid/filter change with no other adjustments. I took it to a transmission shop and asked them to check the band adjustment first before dropping the pan and tearing into it. They were leaning towards a full rebuild. Tightening the front band fixed the issue but they mentioned it took 3 full turns to adjust it and that indicates a problem and the transmission likely needs a rebuild. I have the truck now and it is shifting well. Is 3 turns of the adjustment screw too much for the front band adjustment to get to the required inch pounds (before backing off)? I know you back it out 1 3/4 turns for the 48RE so 3 turns of the adjustment screw doesn't seem terribly bad to me....

Transmission band replacement/rebuild soon?

I climbed under the truck this morning and took a look at the front band adjustment screw. It seems its about flush with the lock/jam nut that holds it in position. Anyone have an idea of if I am borrowed time? Im guessing that means that there will not be room for another band adjustment so I may have 30000 miles or so before I am looking at band replacement or just full transmission rebuild.. which is what the shop was suggesting. Any guess about band life left? Do most guys here just do the full rebuild once its required to replace the band?

I'm not a transmission expert, but if it now shifts decently, I wouldn't get too excited about it.

Start saving for a trans, at the very least a good VB and Torque Converter.

That way if you don't need it you can at least breathe easy.

You can install a slip-in band with just the pan/VB off to replace the worn one that is in it. If the drum is not scarred and in good shape that should be all you need.

Could be a bent band strut too.
